Federal Government Policy Attacked

LEADING TO UNEMPLOYMENT United Press Association—By Electrle Telegraph—Copyright. Received Thursday, 11.5 p.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 8. Addressing the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce at Sydney to-day the president (Mr. Gordon Jones) complained that tho Commonwealth Government’s policy was leading to serious -unemployment. He pointed out that it should be realised that only a relatively .small proportion of manufacturers could directly or indirectly be engaged in war activities. The Government’® war policy appeared to have an entire disregard for its effect on employment. “We have the spectacle of Cabinet pulling in almost as many directions as i there are Ministers. Wo have one ■ Minister advocating business as usual an another urging people to spend less and save every penny. Manufacturers also found that senior Government officers held views diametrically opposed to their Ministers.” Mr. Jones contended that Australia’* war policy should be fundamentally based on the maintenance of employment for all employable people.
