RANGIWAHIA A good attendance of visitors and 1 members gathered on Tuesday after-. noon to celebrate the ninth birthday, j Tho president, Mrs. Billinghurst, cx- j tended a welcome to all, particularly to tho president and members from Kimbolton Institute. Arrangements were finalised for the birthday evening on Friday. Invitations were received from SVaituna West and Kimbolton W.l.s to attend their birthdays. Mrs. Smith gave a comprehensive report of the federation council meeting and was congratulated on being elected to the federation committee. Mrs. Billinghurst asked the ex-president, Mrs. A. McKenzie, to present the trophies for the past year, Mrs. J. Thompson being the winner of the general competitions and Mrs. Guthrie for the potato competition. The latter was asked to tell her method of growing and gaining a result of 1091bs. of potatoes from three tubers, which sho did. Members were reminded of tho golden thread, “The Rata," being the June subject. The birthday cake which Mesdames J. Thompson and C. Smith had made and iced was much admired. Members of tho drama circle under Mrs. Mills, read a very amusing play which was thoroughly enjoyed. Competitions for the day were won as follows:—Best underslip (not more than 2s a yard), Mesdames S. Dcilil 1, W. Deilil 2, D. Jones 3; best small bowl of berries, Mesdames Evans J, Billinghurst 2, Jenkins 3; garden circle, best chrysanthemum, Mrs. Jenkins. Afternoon tea brought a very happy birthday to a close. MAKOMAKG A successful social afternoon, its object to raise funds for Red Cross work, was arranged by the W.l. for Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Eising presided. A delightful programme was enjoyed by all present, with an instrumental trio j (piano, violin and ’cello) by Misses Fay, Joy and Anne Flood, of Palmerston North, and the same three young musicians sweetly harmonised in part songs unaccompanied. Miss Yvonne Ansin, talented young Hastings p er ' former, contributed vocal and elocutionary items and Miss Fay Flood also delighted with elocutionary items. Describing her experiences of Scotland and Scottish hospitality, Miss M. Jones, secretary of the Y.W.C.A., Palmerston North, gave a talk which was at once interesting and inspiring. Sho described the Scottish war memorial which is symbolic of the great war and as a concluding thought she said that in th< dark and troublous days ahead peace could only be found by putting from our minds all thoughts of bitterness *nd turning out hearts to eternal light. A jolly game was arranged by Mrs. Holdaway and entered into with great zest and won by Miss Jones. The sales stall was well patronised and together with two competitions realised approximately £4. The cake competition was won by Mr. W. Darley and the brush went to Mrs. F. H. Hoggard Mrs. A. Wylie, hostess for the afternoon, assisted by committee members, served a refreshing cup of tea, Mesdames Flood and Ansin kindly judged the competitions for the day the placings being: —Preserved fruit, Mrs. Eising 1, Mrs. Hoggard 2, Mrs. Day 3; best bloom, Mrs. Eddie 1, Mrs. Murtne 2. Mrs. Hoggard 3. Mrs Eising thanked all who had helped by the attendance and in various way to make the function so successful. She also reported that up to the present the Red Cross workers had made approximately 160 yards of gauze into dressings besides making sponge and hospital bags, bandages and other hospital comforts. Pianoforts accompaniments were played by Mrs. C. Holdaway and Miss V. Hampton.
