OR. R. 3MABEY WELCOMED BACK AFTER LONG ILLNESS

A meeting of the Woodville County Council was held yesterday, there being present Crs. M. O. Grainger (chairman), E. D. Cattanacb, H. Sheffield, R. H. Morgan, G. Peebles, W. Galloway, R. Mabey, the engineer (Mr. W. J. Hawkes) and the clerk (Mr. J. M. Graham). Leave of absence was granted Cr. O. H. Druce.

Before proceeding with the business of the meeting the chairman expressed pleasure at being able to welcome Cr. Mabey back to the council table after a long and serious illness and he hoped that Cr. Mabey would retain his present good health. The State Advances Corporation wrote acknowledging receipt of the council’s letter and noting the explanation of the misunderstanding that arose on the part of the prospective borrower in question.—Received. The Woodville Borough Council wrote asking for an estimate of the cost of scarifying and grading Gladstone Streee.—lt was agreed to supply the estimate.

The Commissioner of Transport advised that ho had received from the police a report of an accident that occurred on Elliott’s Road, near the United dairy factory, on April 24. The report stated that a car skidded in an excessive depth of loose metal and overturned. The matter was referred to the council in case some action was considered necessary in tho interests of road safety. The chairman stated that he had asked the county engineer to investigate the matter and a report from him stated that an inspection of the locality 'in question revealed that there was not an excessive amount of metal on the road. He said that it often happened during long week-ends wfien no grading was being done, that the surface of the road became corrugated, but this would not cause any inconvenience to any car driven at a reasonable speed. Mr. J. C. Bolton, chairman of the Woodlands Road School Committee, wrote asking that the engineer supply an estimate of the cost or resurfacing tho asphalt portions of the school grounds by the council’s plant and staff.

It was resolved, on the motion of Crs. Morgan and Cattanacb, that the engineer be authorised to compile an estimate of the cost and arrange with the school committee for the work to bo carried out.

The ranger, T. S. R. Schaw, reported that he had impounded 57 cows during the past month. Cr. Sheffield mentioned that the handrails on the Totara Road bridge were in need of repair.—The matter was left in the hands of the engineer, Mr. W. J. Hawkes.
