NEW ZEALAND’S WAR EFFORT
Wage Increase Demands Condemned COUNTY CHAIRMAN CONSIDERS MOST UNFORTUNATE A reference to the new demands of motor drivers at yesterday's meeting of the Oroua County Council caused the chairman (Cr. A. Campbell) to offer the comment that it was most unfortunate that in a time like the present when the Empire was facing a very grave situation that there should be demands for increased wages. “Wo have heard • the call for increased production and it is rather sad to think that many industries are asking for and getting, through the Arbitration Court, increases in wages. The farmer was answering the call for increased production and was working cheerfully, despite somewhat irksome conditions and with no prospect of the level of his returns lifting. “I listened to the remarks of the Prime Minister about the praise of waterside workers at Lyttelton for working overtime in loading overseas vessels but he did nqt say anything about the rates of pay which were paid to the men. It was disgusting, I think,” he concluded.
