Wellington Win Shield

DECIDED BY THRILLING CONTEST IN LAST EVENT Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 10. The national track and field championships of the New Zealand Amateur Association were attended by 6000 people at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, on Saturday and closed on a thrilling note. With one event, the mile medley, to be decided one point separated Otago (40) and Wellington (41) for the Championship {Shield. V. P. Boot, 830 yards champion, ran the final halfirmile of the medley and in effect won the shield for Wellington. G. Davie (Otago) put up a great effort but could not foot it with the champion. The Wellington team equalled the New* Zealand record for the event, 3mins. 34secs. Seldom has such a demonstration of excitement been witnessed at a a athletic gathering as occurred during the running of this mile. It was a fitting climax to a day of thrills. The result made the final points: Wellington, 46; Otago, 42; Hawke’s Bay-Poverty Bay, 17; Auckland and Canterbury, each 15; West Coast, North Island, 12.

Pole vault: D. Weichart (West Coast, North Island). High jump: L. Grey (Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay). *>hot putt-: J. Opie (Otago). Javelin threw: F. Adlam (West Coast, North Island). Hammer throw: M. Spillane (Otago). Hop, step and jump: C. A. Calvert (Auckland). Eight Wellington athletes, five Otago, five Hawke’s Bay, three West Coast (North Island), two Auckland and one Canterbury athlete equalled or bettered New Zealand standards. Weichart (West Coast) with his 12 feet pole vault was the only athlete to equal a best New Zealand performance. Wellington won the Queensland Jubilee • Commemoration Shield for representatives obtaining tho most points in records, best New Zealanders’ performances and standards. Sharpley and McCarthy were the only athletes to take double championships. Sharpley, who also took second place in the 100 yards, is due to sail with the second echelon.

A fanfare of trumpets preceded thq official opening. Boot, tho Olympic Games representative, now in camp at Trcntham, mounted the dais in the centre of the ground and in accordance with the custom carried out at the opening of the Olympic Games, took the oath on behalf of all the competitors. The spirit of oath taken to amateurism was that predominant in their hearts, said the Governor-General in declaring the championships open. They would be remembered as worthy of the Centennial occasion.

The Deputy Prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser) said the occasion was the record successful one that the N.Z.A.A.A. had determined should mark the Centennial year.

Tho Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) congratulated the association on the fine way it had arranged and carried out the meeting. A further fanfare of trumpets heralded tho Governor-General’s opening of the championships and hundreds of pigeons were liberated. The New Zealand flag was unfurled from the field masthead and the band played the National Anthem. At the end of each championship the three placed competitors mounted tho platform and to the accompaniment of a trumpet fanfare received their medals and the applause of tho crowd while the provincial flags were hoisted.

There was a parade of athletes for the Speight Cup before the start. Twenty-six men and two women who were ex-champions headed the parade led by the 81-year-old former champion, 11. Stqwell. The awards were:—Wellington, 89 points; Hawke’s BayPoverty Bay, 84$; Auckland, 81$; Canterbury, 80$; West Coast, North Island, 78; Otago, 74. Hon. P. Fraser 'presented the E. L. Macassey Memorial Trophy to Tyrie (Otago) for his 440 yards win and the Lovelock Challenge Cup to Pullar (Wellington) for his mile victory. Results:—
