From Our Own Correspondent. School Picnic A large gathering of parents and residents attended the annual school picnic, which was held in Mr. C. E. Corpe’s paddock on Thursday. The weather clerk produced hot sunshine and a light breeze, which was much appreciated by the children. The time was pleasantly passed with races and games, while ice creams and sweets were distributed at intervals. After afternoon tea, which was provided by the ladies, Mr. D. C. Old (chairman) welcomed the parents and visitors. He thanked the Rev. Fleury for his fortnightly visits to the school, whereupon the children gave three hearty cheers. The Rev. Fleury addresssd the children, and th long looked for prizes were presented. An interesting display of handwork was on show in the school room and many and varied were the articles made by the children. Special prizes were donated by Mrs. D. P. Buchanan, and Mrs. Fleury judged Nancy Eames 1, Betty Bush 2, Trevor Short 1 and Trevor Bowater 2. Personal and General Mr. T. B. Insoll, who has been the guest of an old friend of his batchelor days, Mr. D. P. Buchanan, and who was the original school teacher at the Beaconsfield School, paid a visit to the school last week. A pleasant time was passed interviewing and talking with the pupils. Mr. Insoll recalled the days when there was only a track through the bush, which was standing right up to the school. In those days there wasn’t a schoolhouse and Mr. InsoJl boarded with an early German settler. The present school residence, which is 70 years old, was used as a school and residence combined. After he was married the residence was added to and a new school, which has since been burnt down, was built where the present school stands. Mr. Insoll later retired from teaching and became secretary of the Hamilton County Council. Mr. Insoll now lives in Remuera, Auckland. Mr. Robbie, agriculture instructor for the Wanganui Education Board, paid an official visit to the school last Monday. He was accompanied by Mrs. Robbie. Masters Allen and Fred Richardson, Mervyn Old, and Misses Fay and Ma,da Oorpe are secondary school pupils home for the summer vacation. Motoring to Foxton Beach and camping for the week-end will be Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Snell and Miss Beverly Snell. Mr. T. Wilson, of Tapane, left for Auckland on Friday night and will spend the Christmas holidays with his mother at Mount Albert. Children are reminded of the gift service to be held at St. Mary’s on December 24. The goose which was raffled by the golf club was won by Mr. J. Hamilton, of Stan way. Mr. and Mrs. R. Jaggard and Mr. and i Mrs. D. Old motored to Wanganui last week-end to attend a gift evening tendered to Miss Grace Palmer in view of her i appoaching marriage. ■ Miss G. Buchanan, of Wellington, is spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Buchanan, "Mayfield.” , A beneficial rain fell last week-end, but , shearing and haymaking activities have ' been resumed again.
