Hitler Criticised in Germany
COMMENT BY SOLDIERS A report from Cologne which come* via Zurich mentions that the "Hitler Salute" as well as the "Heil Hitler" has now almost entirely vanished, most people demonstratively saying "Guten Tag" or "Gruss Gott." Soldiers stationed at Cologne are said to be discussing the situation very freely, and a colonel was heard to remark that if he were to punish, people who spoke ugainst the war and against Hitler he would have to intern half his troops. In the industrial districts of the Rhine a number of men have ignored their calling-up orders. It is siguifleant that they have not been punished, but merely told to hold themselves in readiness. A great many people known to be "politically unreliable" were not called up at all. The Reichsbank has already issued live-mark notes, and is said to be preparing an issue of one and two-mark notes. The Freiheits-Sender is now more active than ever, broadcasting as a regular feature contradictions and exposure of the Nazi lies and propaganda broadcasts. It has mentioned the war efforts of Canada, New Zealand and Australia, which have been hushed up by the Nazi press and wireless. About the Eastern situation it remarked: "In the first phase of the war here Hitler has indeed won a local battle, but he has lost all his war aims, which means that after one victorious battle he has already lost the war." —Cinna, in Time and Tide.
