Baseball League
UNITED AND COOKS NOW EQUAL Two very exciting games were played on Saturday in the Manawatu Baseball League. The weather being windy the play was not as fast as the previous week, but excellent baseball was produced by the four teams. In the first game on No. 1 diamond between Cook’s Cubs and United "A" the game was keenly contested right from tho beginning. As Cook’s Cuba were tho only team up to date who have played a draw with tho United team, the teams were both on top form and it was a royal battle from the start. Cook’s Cubs took the bat first and scored three runs In the first innings. Trembath was pitching for Cook’s and in the second innings for United they scored five runs to Cook’s two runs. This made tho game tied, in the third innings Cook’s scored three runs, while they held tho United squad to no runs. Cook’s then scored one run in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, while the United "A" scored one in the fourth and sixth, and two in the seventh.
For tho United team Bradley and Robb played well, but Edmonds was excellent, and ho was never in trouble. His team gave him wonderful support al Ithrough the game. Hughie and Robb were the leading scorers for the United "A" team. Trembath, pitching for Cook’s Cubs was in good form, and C. Leslie made some beautiful infield catches for Cook’s. For Cook’s T. Carmichael and C. Leslie were undoubtedly the pick of the team. Both Cook’s and United "A" teams were much improved all round on previous play. The final score in this game was 11—9 in favour of Cook’s Cubs.
In the game between Airways and Highways on No. 2 diamond, Ailways seemed to have the game In tho bag, but Highways made a wonderful recovery in the final innings and scored ten runs to beat tlio Airways team 12 —9. For Highways Trcmain and Caryle were the leading scorers with two run 3 apiece. In the third innings Airways had a big innings by scoring four runs, and then three again in the fifth, they also scored one run in the second and seventh innings. Highways were slow in getting started, and nearly left it too late, as they had only scored two runs up to the sixth innings, one in the third and one in the fourth. Adams, captain of the Highways, must have given his men a real pep talk as they came out in the seventh innings and scored ten runs. This is Highways first win of the season, but now that they have shown their real form they will be a hard team to beat in the league. Fdr Highways C. Gandy, M. Caryle and R. Tremain were the most improved players, their play was absolutely faultless. Adams also played a good gamo behind the bat. This team has had the misfortune to lose some of their players but they have shown a
lighting spirit of a championship team* For Airways Opeushaw, the giant first baseman, played a wonderful game and was a very dangerous man at tho bat. lie is ono of tho most improved players in the league. MeClymont, tho flying Scotsman, who plays third base for Airways, also found his feet on Saturday and very few balls got past him. Bhailor was in his usual form at pitching, and was never in trouble until the seventh innings, and then Highways put the hoodoo sign on him. The league points to date arc as follows: —United "A" 7, Cook’s Cub 3 7j Airways 4, Highways 2.
