Work of the Red Cross
PLEA FOR ASSISTANCE MADE Before the Repertory Society’s production commenced in the Empire Hall on Saturday evening a plea for assistance for the Palmerston North branch of the Red Cross Society was made by Mr. Amos McKegg, who stated that tho proceeds of the play were to be handed over to the Red Cross to help it iu its work. In this connection he paid a tribute to the Repertory Society for its generous gesture. The work of the Red Cross had to be carried on and was new more important than ever, said Mr. McKegg, as it wa* a national necessity. It could not be conducted, however, without sufficient funds, and there could be no more worthy object for support. Some 20(1 people were in training for first-aid work and one could never tell when Palmerston North might require their services in some emergency of a national character. In recognition of the fact that the proceeds were being devoted to their work, members of the nursing division, attired in neat uniforms, acted aa ushers.
