COMPETITION CRICKET

Woodville Beaten by Innings And 28 Runs GAME HAS INTERESTING FINISH Woodville failed by 28 runs to avoid an innings’ defeat in tho concluding day’s play on the Recreation Ground on Saturday of their competition cricket ] match with Phoepix. The previous week Phoenix had compiled 193 runs in their first innings in reply to Woodville ’s total of 39, leaving the local ' players in an unenviable position. j After the rain during the week, the pitch was in good condition, but the showery weather made playing condi- ■ tions difficult. The Woodville batsmen put up a much better showing than on the previous Saturday, their second innings realising 126, giving Phoenix the match by an innings and 28 runs. Burlace and Bolton opened for Woodville and these two appeared to be well settled when Bolton was run out with 16 runs on the board. Paterson was next and his innings, in which were displayed a wide variety of scoring shots, was the highlight of the after- - noon. After making seven, Burlace . sont one to Bott, who retained it. Shooter followed, but was bowled with- l out scoring by one he did not know ( much about. P. Miller and Paterson j kept up the scoring rate. P. Miller was , going nicely, but when at 10 he was run out. Paterson and O. Miller continued to score well, but Miller lobbed one to Tilley when at nine. Charles hit his first ball for four, but failed to ; do likewise with tho second and was : clean bowled, Nicholson following. ; With three fours and a couple of singles, Nicholson was responsible for a perceptible wagging of the “tail,” “ which was carried on by Boxall, who looked to be going well before being ] skittled by Erickson. With his score at 35, Paterson was in complete charge of the bowling, but ho played an 1 elevated ono back to Stewart, who held a sound catch. Beale with four and ' Scott four were the remainder of the . Woodville batsmen. ' Among the Phoenix bowlers Erickson was again well among the wickets with five for 18 runs.
