Close of 1939 Season At Hokowhitu TRIBUTES TO MANAWATU CLUB’S LATE PATRON The Manawatu Golf Club concluded the 1939 season at Hokowhitu on Saturday with the customary mixed foursome and tljie time-honoured ceremony of presenting the prizes won during the season. These were to have taken place on the previous Saturday but were postponed because of the death of the club’s patron, Mr. Lionel Abraham. After the last cards were in on Satur day, members and their friends gath ered at the clubhoust and, before proceeding with the presentation of prizes, the president, Mr. B. E. Keiller, said ho wished to pay tribute to the club’s late patron, Mr. Abraham, who, with a few other enthusiasts, founded the club in 1885. Continuing, Mr. Keiller mentioned that Mr. Abraham had been secretary for thirty-five years to 1930 and that, incidentally, tho club had been rather unique in that it had had only two secretaries during its forty years of existence. He added that when Mr. Abraham had given up tho secretaryship ho had been elected patron of tho club, a position he still held at his death. Mr. Abraham had always been keenly interested in tho club’s welfare and the club, he thought, had indeed been fortunate in having had men like Mr. Abraham to lay the foundation so well. The last time Mr. Abraham had been present at Hokowhitu had been on the occasion of the club dinner, which was inaugurated in conjunction with the cup which Mr. Abraham had presented. Mr. Keiller added that Mr. Abraham would be very much missed by all his friends and lie moved:—
‘ ‘ That a letter of sympathy be • sent to Mrs. Abraham and family from this meeting.” Mr. Keiller then asked members, as a mark of respect to the memory of their late patron, to stand in silence. A Successful Season. Mr. Keiller referred to the 1935-39 sesaon as one of the most successful in the club’s history, and he hoped that all members had thoroughly enjoyed it. Ho congratulated all winners of tho competitions and he particularly wished to congratulate Mr. Ken Glendinning on his outstanding work as club captain and also for his leadership of the team which had retained the Wilson Cup, won at the close of the previous season. Tho president also made reference to the quietly efficient work of Mr. Ken Chamberlain, tho club’s popular secretary, ancl to that of Mr. J. R. Galloway and his staff. He contended that the course had been kept in perfect order and that it hud been a credit to those responsible and also to the club. Ho added that members were glad to see Mr. Galloway back with them after his recent indisposition. After thanking Mr. Horton of the Greens Research Committee for help given at all times and to Mr. and Mrs. Chatfield, he asked Mrs. Keiller to present the trophies which were won as under:— Clnb championship: O. Both went around in So in tho morning and thei rfirst halves in tho afternoon were: Tucker 43, Ward 44.
