SIX U-BOATS IN THE CARIBBEAN SEA
(Received 14, 11.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Oct. 13. The chairman, Mr Snyder, of the Military Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, following an inspection of coastal fortifications, announced that he had information that six submarines were operating in the Caribbean Sea, ostensibly German. The London Daily Telegraph confirms the belief that Germany's 10.000ton pocket battleship Admiral Scheer is somewhere in the South Atlantic acting as a lone raider. The British Navy is searching for her. It is believed that she was responsible for the sinking of the Clement od October 1. It is stated on high Admiralty authority in London that there Is no confirmation of a report that an enemy submarine was sighted in the Pacific. The Washington correspondent of the New York Herald-Tribune saj's that the i American neutrality patrol reported that tankers which had refuelled a sub- [ marine off Key West (Florida) were j Italian. The Neutrality Act was nol | violated because belligerents are allowed 24 hours in American ports for refuelling and repairing.
