FIVE CAUSES ADVANCED COUNTY COUNCILS HOLD TOO AIUCH BEING SPENT Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 26. Hospital rating was a burning hot question among all county councils, said Mr. C. J. Talbot, of Fairlie, iu his presidential address at the biennial conference of the New Zealand Counties Association. This, he *aid, was due to the steep ascent of the financial requirements of hospita* boards. The main causes-of the increase in hospital expenditure were:— (1) People wero becoming more hospital minded. (2) Tho increase in staffs. (3; The increase in the cost of provisions and drugs. (1. Tho demand for better surgical and medical equipment. (5) Renovations of some hospitals. Count,) councils were unanimous that too much money was being spent on hospitals and not enough on roads. They also felt that there was little justilicat.on to-day for any increase in taxation on tho land to meet the cost of rapidiyiiicreasing social services, especially smeo the prices paid for primary pro ducts were unstable and comparatively low.
