Germans Foment Trouble in Rumania
Nazi Influence in Banat
CENTRE OF NATION-WIDE ORGANISATION United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Thursday, 1 a.m. BUCHAREST, July 26. Leading Rumanians at Timisoara, the capital of Banat province adjoining Hungary, have presented a hundred-page petition to the Government urging immeidato action to prevent the province’s German majority strangling the Rumanians economically. The German population of the province is 250,000. Reuter’s Bucharest correspondent says Germans all over the province have organised on Nazi lines their own formations which are supervising a complete boycott of Rumanian traders. Timisoara has become the headquarters of the German minority throughout Rumania, ordering the social and commercial life of Germans and forcing out of business those refusing to join the organisation. Seven Nazi newspapers throughout Banat are participating.in the German press campaign against Britain.
Rumania has refused the German request for a free zone on the Bega Canal from Timisoara to Hungary because of the area’s stragetic importance.
