High School 14, Wanganui Technical 5

FIRST FIFTEEN’S SUCCESS Playing a much better game with the wind in their favour than against it, the Palmerston North Boys’ High School first fifteen defeated the Wanganui Technical Collcgo first fifteen by 14 points to five in an attractive interschool match at the Palmerston North Showgrounds yesterday. Neither team scored during the first spell, when Palmerston North faced a cold south-westerly wind. Tho Wanganui backs, who appeared to have an advantage in weight, succeeded in eluding several tacklcra and made use of the wind with accurate punting to the corner of tho field, but were held by the Palmerston North forwards who broke through with dribbling rushes. The Palmerston North backs, except with one or two strong attacks by their three-quarters, did not make much impression against tho solid Wanganui tackling in the first spell. Wanganui not infrequently lost ground as the result of tho fast breaking of the Palmerston North forwards, led by Campbell. Both full-backs played well. From a scrum close to the Palmerston North goal-lino early in the second spell, the Wanganui half-back sent McCarthy across for a try which he converted. Poananga, speedy Palmerston North w'ing three-quarter, made a good run to tho Wanganui twenty-fivo and while Wanganui wero defending close to the line, Mason muffled the fullback’s clearing kick, held on to the ball and slipped across for a try. Ryan converted, making tho score: Wanganui Technical 5, Palmerston North High School 5. From then on Palmerston North car ried tho game almost entirely into Wanganui territory, Poananga and Dun calf, second five-eighth, being the most penetrative of tho Palmerston North backs. Duncalf scored at the end of a passing rush in which Poananga made most of the ground, the try being unconverted. Tho Palmerston North forwards drove Wanganui to their goalline, and from a lineout in the corner, Powmall dived across, Ryan’s kick again missing. Duncalf scored the third unconverted try from a short passing rush in tho Wanganui twentylive, making the final score: Palmerston North High School 14, Wanganui Technical 5. Tho teams were:— Palmerston North Boys’ High School: Ryan, Poananga, Hardic, Mason, Duncalf, Nash, Churchill, Pownaii, Closely, Anderson, Smith, Liggins, Chapman, Eyles, Campbell. Wanganui Technical College: Bailey, Emosi, Dovi, Croom, McCarthy, Price, Burling, Newsham, Harris, Walton, Talcorangi, Reed, Patchett, Swinton, Ahern. Mr. C. Eglinton was the referee.
