Canadian Butter Surplus

ASSISTING TTHE UNEMPLOYED A scheme for the distribution of Uie surplus of 3,000,0001 bof butter in Canada was commenced last month. The plan, which is being tried out in j Montreal, is expected to be extended throughout the Dominion. For every pound of butter received in exchange for a coupon, the unemployed family head must buy an additional pound from tho same grocer. He pays for the extra pound with his usual weekly relief allowance. A plan of distribution according to the size of families has been arranged. A family of two would receive one pound purchased and one pound on a coupon all the way up to a family of 13, who would receive seven pounds purchase and seven pounds on seven coupons. The above are worked out on a ■weekly basis. Montreal has been allotted 450,000 pounds to be distributed at the rate of 45,000 pounds a week for 10 weeks. at 6s Gd, 9 at 4s 6d, 3 at 9s 3d. A line of 2-th. wethers offered by D. W. Reid realised 15s 4d. * Fat Cattle. Several small lines of run cattle came forward in the fat cattle section but these were not very forward in condition and buyers contented themselves with mostly the ex-dairy sorts. Prices were fairly firm but the tendency was slightly easier. Quotations were as follow:—Cows, 8 A.A. at £6 6s, 9at £6 12s Gd, 9 at £5 2s 6d; Hereford cows at £4 lls; others, £3 7s 6d, £4 ss, £4 12s 6d, £5 7s 6d, £5 10s, £6, £6 Bs, £6 10s, £7 to £7 ss; heifers, £5 ss, £5 7s 6d, £5 14s, £5 15s, £6 to £6 2s 6d; vealers, 10s, 17s to £3 to £4 2s 6d. Station Cattle. Station cattle came forward in limited numbers to meet with a good inquiry. Prices were firm at late rates with a hardening tendency. Realisations were as follow: 60 A.A. steers at £5 9s, 20 A.A. heifers at £4 17s, 7 empty Hereford heifers at £4 3s, 3 coloured steers at £6 10s, 4 S.H. heifers at £3 10s, 40 heifers ex-Gisborne at £3, 9 forward steers at £8 2s, 18 A.A. steers at £4 18s 6d, 14 steers at £4 10s, 21 Hereford steers at £3 16s Gd, 18 A.A. steers at £3 14s, 25 steers at £6 15s, 7 at £6 15s, S Hereford heifers at £2 10s, 12 A.A. heifers at £3 6s, 5 at £3 2s and 14 at £2 14s; 20 steers on account A. W. Roberts at £6 19s; 17 empty cows at 21s. Store Cattle. The demand for boner cows was firm with the quality hardly up to late sales. Realisations were as follow: 20s, 255, £2, £2 ss, £2 10s, £2 ISs, £3, £3 Is, £3 2s 6d, £3 ss, £3 6s, £3 7s, £3 10s, £3 lls, £3 12s; empty heifers, £2 12s 6d, £2 17s to £3 12s. Dairy Cattle. Dairy cattle values showed little variation on those ruling last week with the exception of the prices paid for a special entry on account of E. Hills, of Makino, whose cattle commanded very good prices, ranging from £lO 10s up to £l4 for eight springing cows. Other realisations were as follow: Springing heifers, £4 17s 6d, £5, £5 10s, £6 to £6 12s 6d; springing cows, £3, £3 10s, £5 ss, £5 15s, £6, £6 10s, £6 12s 6d, £7, £7 10s to £B, with better quality lines making from £8 15s to £9 to £lO 15s for a pedigree beast; weaner heifers, £2 7s 6d, £3 2s to £3 2s Gd.
