Release of Colonel Spears Refused

MORE REPRESENTATIONS BY BRITAIN LONDON, July 10. Mr. R. A. Butler, in the House of Commons, repeated that representations had fruitlessly been made to Japan for the release of LieutenantColonel Spears and the matter had now been taken up with the Japanese Ambassador in London. A definite charge against Colonel Spears has not been formulated.

A Domei News Agency message from Kalgan on Juno 7th giving the results of the examination of Mr. Spears (the British Embassy official who was arrested by tho Japanese) alleged that he was found hiding insido the Japanese lines and was also sending by a Chinese Communist a wireless message to the British authorities regarding the conditions inside the Japanese lines. It is claimed that Air. Spears was gathering information on behalf of tho Kuomintang Chinese Communists. TO BE COURT-MARTIALLED SHANGHAI, July 10. The Japanese spokesman announced that Lieut.-Colonel Spears will bo courtmartialled. It will be the first time the Japanese Army nas brought a foreign attacho to trial. A semi-official message from Peking states that Colonel Spears appeared before the Japanese Military Court at Kalgan on July 5 but the result has not been indicated.
