BOBBY CALF POOL
Advantage to Fanners
IN ORE ABED PAYMENT POSSIBLE Perhaps the best argument in favour of the establishment of a bobby calf pool in the Woodville district is the fact that last season calves hereabouts fetched on an average 6s, whereas prices under the pool system varied from 9s 11.8 d to 8s 9.4 d, while at Shannon, which is generally considered comparable with Woodville, the average realisation on passed calves at the works was 8s 10.6 d, of which 7s 2d was paid at tho gate. Variations were largely accounted for by road and rail transport costs and the Woodville district, being made up largely of small holdings, would make road cartage at any rato as reasonable as possible. Tho overlapping of buying lorries, of which perhaps six or more pass over tha same route in a single day, must in the long run affect adversely the price of the calves.
Tho association controlling the booby calf pools accepts only animals of 521 b or greater weight, which in effect controls the quality of the meat, and this in turn means a better marketing value.
It is not usual for the Woodville district to be backward in matters which would benefit tho dairy farmers and it is to the credit of the Farmers' Union Committee that there is now an effort to promote in this district a scheme which has proven popular and successful in most parts of the island. A meeting with a view to formation of a pool in the Woodville district is advretised for to-morrow.
