From Our Own Correspondent. Farmers' Union
Mr. J. D. Kilgour presided over a meet ing of the Apiti branch of the Farmers Union, at which there was a fair attendance of members. The speaker was the now provincial president, Mr. D. G. Gordon, of Talhape, and his instructive address on union matters was folldWeu with interest. Mr. Gordon also obtained the opinions of local members on man> matters affecting farmers. Arrangements were made for the branch to be represented at the meeting of the Licensing Authority at Feilding. Negotiations arcnow under way to arrange a schedule of charges for this district. This will be the last chance the farmers and carriers wili have of reaching a mutual agreement, as the Licensing Authority has stated that, in the event of no agreement being reached, he will fix the charges. A district bobby calf pool has been formed. The judging of root crops took place on Tuesday by Mr. H. de O. Chamberlain. The entries were smaller this year, but some of 'he crops were quite good and the results will soon be made available. Messrs. J. D. Kilgour, A. \V. Viles, W. J. Viles, F. V. Viles, R. McKay, 11. Jensen, D. Kearney and L. Hogan accompanied the judge. Anglican Guild The ladies of sst. Luke's Guild met on Thursday afternoon. Those present were the hostesses, Mrs. S. F. Morris and Miss Gilmore-Smith, Mesdames C. M. Stanley (president), S. H. White, J. H. Cowan, A. E. Prujean and XewaJl (Feilding). Miss Gilmore-Smith and Mrs. Prujean were appointed trustees. Plans were discussed for a concert and social evening with stalls and competitions to augment funds. It w-as decided to arrange this function for September next. Ah present donated prizes for competitions. The hostesses served afternoon tea and were accorded a vote of chanks for entertaining the guild. School Committee
The school committee met on Wednesday evening and there were present Mssrs. H. A. Wildbore (chairman), S. Le Cjuesne, A. W. Benseman, G. Watkins, W. Hogan (secretary) and S. F. Morris (head teacher) The head teacher's report gave the school roll as 42 boys and 34 girls in the primary department and six boys and 11 girls in the secondary department. Two maps have been purchased, making the school set complete. The head teacher was authorised to purchase the necessary equipment for a percussion band for the infant classes. Learners’ Dance
The learners’ dance on Thursday evening was attended by ionic 40 young people. Mrs. Morris played for some oi the dances and Mr. Hogan assisted with his accordeon. The radio pick-up was also used. Those helping to teach the learners to waltz were Mesdames J. Osborne, R. Muir, G. Watkins; Misses S. Prujean, M. Mawhinney; Messrs. S. F. Morris, J. Osborne, O. Watkins, M. Stewart, A. W. Benseman, and others. Supper Mas served by the high school girls.
Members of the Fanners' Union and the Young Farmers’ Club held a debate o/i Saturday evening, the subject being
’ That the tractor can economically supersede the hors© for general farm work.” The young farmers' team took the affirmtive and won the debate, their side of the question having been well prepared. Messrs. H. Mclntyre, M. Stewart and E. Payton were the young farmer speakers, while Messrs. J. D. Kilgour. L. A. Martin, D. Kearney and H. Jensen were the negative side, who scored a few points less than the winners. Mr. S. F. Morris was the judge Golf In the Apiti Golf Club championship the first round has been completed as follows; M. Stewart beat C. Osborne, C Buckman beat J. Lash, W. Duncan beat C. McGhie, S. Morris beat Whit. Pratt. Methodist Anniversary On Friday afternoon the quarterly meeting of the Apiti Methodist Church Circuit was held, when the chairman, Rev. J. H. Allen, of Feilding, presided. All departments of church activities are progressing well. In the evening a large gathering assembled at the hall for a tea and social. Rev. Ashworth presided and extended a cordial welcome to all visiting friends and church members, making particular mention of several whose connection with the church dated back to the opening day 45 years ago. Mr. F. S. Guy, of Feilding, who was one of the prime movers in establishing the church in Apiti, expressed his pleasure at being present. Rev. Ashworth read greetings trom Rev. Old, Rev. R. C. Eaton, Rev. \» Parker, Rev. T. R Richards, W Wilson, Rev. Robinson, Rev. A. O. Jones, Rev. J. W. Parker, Rev. R. C. Patchett and Rev. L Coombridge. There were two birthday cakes in honour of the occasion. Th-i Apiti cake was made by Miss Gwen. Digby and the Rangiwahia cake by Mrs. R. D. Rose. Mrs. B. Miller and Mr. F. S. Guy lighted the candles on the Apiti cake and these were extinguished bv Mr. Ceci. Guy before Mrs. D. Prince cut the cake. Mr. and Mrs. Rose cut the other cake. Rev. Allen (Feilding) gave a short address. Rev. F. E. Fleury, of Kinvbolton, extended the congratulations of the members of the Anglican Church to their Methodist friends. The Baptismal card of Mr. C. V. Guy was mentioned with interest as he was baptised on the day the Methodist Church opened. Rev. L. J. Hodson, of the Presbyterian Church, also conveyed the best wishes of his church people to a sister church in their celebrations. Mr. W. McKay, on behalf of the residents of Apiti, congratulated the church on the progress made, and said that it was essential that the young people should- follow the example of the early settlers and take an interest in the church and local affairs. Mrs. T. H. Purnell conveyed the bc*t wishes of the ladies’ guild and paid a tribute, to the ex celient leadership of their president, Mrs. Ashworth. Mr. W. R. Pratt, for the officebearers, past and present, and Mr. C. Mapson. for Bible class members, adued congratulations. Blakemorc, of Cuba Street, Palmerston North, ad dressed the gathering. An enjoyable concert was then given. Songs were contributed by Mrs. B. Miller (Palmerston North), Mrs. D. Niven (Palmerston North) and Mr. C. V. Guy; vocal duet, Messrs. Bell and Thornton; elocutionary items. Miss Melba Niven. Community singing was led by Messrs. Bell and Thornton, and the aceompanistes were Mesdames Niven, Burnell, Belk. and Mr Bell. The ladies of the guild served slip|>*r, and Rev. Ashworth thanked the concert performers and all who had assisted
in making- the function such a success. On Sunday morning there was a special service for old identities conducted l?y IRev. Ashworth, assisted by Messrs. F. S. Guy and O. Prince. Mrs. B. Miss M. P ."t.-*i»son and her nephew, David Dobson* arc holidaying at Palmerston North. Mr. Owen Watkins' has * returned from a short visit to Wellington. Mr. Syd. Cook is at present on a motor tour in the Auckland district. Mr. Hugh Stanley came up from Wellington on a short visit to his parents. Messrs. J. R. Osborne, H. Vilcs, A. Viles, A. Cowan will leave on Wednesday by tar for Ruakura to contest the Y.F.C. North Island championship debate on i Thursday. The Apiti team and their coach will take with them the best wishes of their club members and friends for I their continued success.
