Hastings Track Work
PREPARATIONS FOR HAWKE’S BAY HUNT MEETING
Due to the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s annual race meeting, which will be held on the Hastings racecourse next Saturday, there was far moro activity on the Hastings tracks on Saturday morning than what there has been of late. The wind had dried up the tracks a great deal, with tho result that the going was quite good. On the Grass Track.
The Bulandshar-Parakeet filly and the Lord Quex-Version colt, both yearlings in L. D. Berry’s stables, hit out very freely for their first attempt with a little pace on.
Social Credit and Tideway were associated over a half-mile. The former finished slightly in front in the fair time of 51isecs.
Morning Flight and the hurdler, Helios, were tried out together over six furlongs, when the forrrjer held an advantage in 1.19, but Helios, for one of his class, went quite well, as the time was up to standard. Hagen, who still carries a lot of overweight, was never allowed his head over five furlongs in 69secs. He may be raced at Hastings next week as part of his preparation for the spring.
Kalika, who has done very little fast work since coming in from her spell, was given a similar task to return the same time.
On the Plough.
Forgetfulness and Etla, both of whom are trained by L. C. Stowe and who will contest the Okawa Maiden at the Hunt fixture, were responsible for a very smart effort for novices to register 64J for five furlongs, or the best of the morning. Both carried light apprentices.
Tidal Lass, with her trainer in the saddle, was only given a feeler when running three furlongs in 39|secs. She should be a handy sort later on.
Reipar, carrying about 9si and never off the bit, registered 1.22 J for three-quarters of a mile. • « •
At the last Hawke’s Bay fixture Fossicker ran two fair races, and since then has gone on the right way. This morning he shaded the useful track galloper, Lindrum, over five furlongs in 65secs.
Charles Hugo had his head in front of Hyderabad over four furlongs in 52secs.—a fair gallop. Both pleased by the resolute manner in which they finished their task.
Kinkajou had little trouble in disposing of Waglinde over five furlongs in 05secs. As a two-year-old earlier m the season she showed a little speed, but this term is a much-improved filly.
Blue Tiger, looking even in better order than when he won the Dannevirke Hunt Cup, had for a companion :he Ring in a useful working gallop of nee round in 1.51 J.
Shani and Royal Spades were assocla--d in a half-mile flutter to return 52 ecs. Over the first part the pace was lot on, but the pair came home very well.
Golden Flame and Elettra were anther pair not out to create fast time, jeing content to come home the last Ive of six furlongs in 67$secs, or 1.20 or the full distance.
• • # Greenore, who has improved with iis training, comfortably ran once .•ound in 1.45.
Solicit took 52Jsecs. for the halfmile, but he looked as if he could have done a little better.
• » • Modern Way just showed the way home to the Arausio gelding. Okyosia, with the Nigger Minstrel-Hinehoto filly two lengths back, at the end of five furlongs in 67secs. * * *
Sternchase, having his first run along for some time, showed that he still knows how to strike out, as against the bit he ran a-half mile in 51$secs.
Inheritance, carrying Mr G. showed once again that his track form is better than his public form, by leisurely running six furlongs in 1.20.
The Jumpers.
Padishah (Mr G. Beatson) and Iddo (C. Shields) were associated in a schooling lesson on the course proper, when they jumped ten of the steeplechase fences, covering a little over a mile and a-half. Both jumped perfectly, with Iddo overshadowing his mate at some of them. However, at the finish Padishah was bowling along a little more strongly than Iddo. The last once round was run in 2.16 - • • * Royal Toast (Mr “Boy” Symes) was schooled over the country on the schooling track, doing a round without making a mistake. * « * Father’s Choice (Ireland) was sent over five of the schooling hurdles, and little fault could be found with his di* play. HAWKE’S BAY ACCEPTANCES Acceptances for the Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s meeting at Hastings next Saturday close with the secretary (Mr 1 A. E. Wishart) at 8 o’clock to-morrow (Wednesday) evening. J. Broughton, who will win tho jockey’s premiership this year, was in good form at Trentham on Saturday and although he did not ride a winner, backers who followed him as a place proposition would have had a profitable day. There were flvo flat races on the programme and Broughton, on four occasions, finished in the money. In the Novice Handicap he was less than two hesds away from the winner on the second favourite, Indian Sun. In the Crofton Handicap he rode the third j favourite, Screen Star, into second [ place. In the Winter Oats he was on the twelfth favourite, Lowenberg, which finished second, and in tho big sprint lie rode the seventh favourite, Royal Bachelor, which beat all but Majority I and Prince Acre.
GRAND NATIONALS AND WINTER CUP HANDICAPS DECLARED TOP WEIGHTS ARE ERINATION, CATALOGUE AND CHARADE Handicaps for the Grand National , Steeplechase and Hurdles, and the Winter Cup, to be run at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting next month, have been declared by Mr. W. P. Russell, as under:—
NOT GOING TO AUSTRALIA Beaulivre, leading two-ycar-old of tho season in New Zealand, will bo a contestant in the Wanganui Guineas next September, all going well in the meantime with the Beau Perc—Passbook colt. This information was given to the Wanganui Chroniclo at Trentham on Saturday by Beaulivre’s new owner, Mr. Harnett, of Wellington, who stated that ho had no intention of racing the colt in Australia. His laudable intention of giving New Zealanders the opportunity of seeing in action a colt promising to develop into a slashing three-year-old will be applauded by all who have the continued progress of the racing game at heart. It will add to tho interest in the Wanganui Guineas, the first of next season’s classics, when Beaulivre takes his place in the field. A newcomer to the racing game, Mr. Harnett purchased Beaulivre last week at the dispersal sale of the late Mr. W. Higgins’ horses, and he secured the colt at 2900 guineas. Beaulivre will remain in S. J. Reid’s stable. PLEET STREET’S GOOD SEASON Fleet Street x*ecorded his ninth win this season when he was placed first in the Members’ Handicap at Trentham on Thursday, and he has been out of a place three times only in 20 starts this term. He was under offer early in the year at £7OO, but the option was not exercised. In the interval, Fleet Street’s winnings have amounted to £ll7B, so a bargain was missed. RANGITIKEI HUNT MEETING Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for all events at the Rangitikei Hunt Club’s steeplechase meeting, to be held on the Marton racecourse on Saturday week, are due to close at 9 o’clock this evening.
