FISCAL REFERENCES TO OTHER COUNTRIES

Telegraph.—Copyrigh t. Received Monday, 9.55 p.m. MELBOURNE, July 10,

During the hearing of an application before the Tariff Board in which the Broken Hill Proprietary Company, Limited, was seeking protection for tho tinplate industry it proposes to establish two representatives of British tinplate manufacturers tendered a joint statement protesting and declaring that if British manufacturers were excluded from the Australian market every effort would bo put forward by British industry to cause a withdrawal of the preferential treatment enjoyed by some Australian exports, especially of canned goods.

The statement added that the British tinplate industry would be compelled to link with tho growing body of British industrial opinion urging the British Government to resume complete freedom to extend fiscal preferences to countries within or without the Empire which were willing and able to grant reciprocal trade advantages.
