Forgery of Cheque

RADIOTRICIAN COMMITTED TOR SENTENCE Two charges were preferred against George Henry Ellis, alias Gordon lan Wilson, of New Plymouth, a radiotrician aged 32, who appeared before Messrs J. T. Bos worth and G. H. Bennett, J.P’s., in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday. On the charge that on or about January 31, 1939, at Wellington, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Maurice John Telford O’Sullivan the sum of £5 17s 6d by falsely representing that a wireless cabinet and dial assembly fittings were his own property and free from any encumbrance, accused was remanded until July 3.

On the charge that on June 9, 1939, at Foxton, he forged tho name of F. R. Robinson to a cheque for £lB drawn on the bank of New Zealand, Foxton, payable to Mr G. Wilson and dated June 9, 1939, with the intent that it be acted upon a 3 genuine, accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence at the supreme Court at Wellington. Detective-Sergeant 11. B. Meiklejohn prosecuted. ..videnco was given by J. S. Shorthouse, hotel licensee at Foxton, that accused came from Wellington with tho intention of opening a business for electrical radio work in Foxton and stayed at witness’s hotel until June 10, when accused submitted the cheque. He stayed under tho name of Gordon Wilson. The police made inquiries about the accused and witness showed them the cheque. £lB in cash was given the accused when he cashed it, and witness expected him to return on June 12, but did not see him again. F. R. Robinson, a garage proprietor in Foxton, gave evidence that on June 8, 1939, accused installed an electric motor on his premises and witness paid him by a cheque drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Foxton. Accused was a minute or so alone in witness’s office. On June 12 the police showed witness a cheque, the number of which corresponded with the number of a cheque removed from near tho back of witness’s cheque book. Tho signature on the cheque was not witness’s and had been forged.

Detective-Sergeant Meiklejohn stated that accused was arrested at New Plymouth on June 21 and when ho was shown tho cheque he said it was one he had filled in and signed and cashed with Shorthouse at Foxton. Further Remanded

Allan Kenneth Ludbrook, of Rautoria, a salesman aged 26, charged that on May 4, 1939 at Christchurch, with intent to defraud, he obtained from Alexander Wallace Jackson the sum of £3 is 2d in money by a valueless bank draft for £3 Is 2d in favour of Leone Crawford, was further remanded to appear in Palmerston North on Monday, July 3.
