From Our Own Correspondent, Personal
Mrs. Wickham, Dominion president of the W.D.F.U., was the guest of Mrs. A. R. Thomson, Buckley, while in Shannon last week. _Miss Jean Brown and her father, Mr. W. N. Brown, of Palmerston North, h£ve left for Sydney, where they intend to stay for some time. Miss Brown, who has been instructress at the hairdressing college, Wellington, for some time, hopes to learn the latest methods used in hairdressing while in Sydney. Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Hunt, New Plymouth, are visiting Shannon and are staying with Mr. and Mrs. V. Pope. Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Heath, Motueka, stayed a few days in Shannon last week as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Edwards, Plimmer Terrace. Farewell Party Prior to leaving Buckley to reside in Shannon, Mr. and Mrs. A. Third and family were entertained at a farewell party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Thomson. There was a representative gathering of Buckley folk, ahd a pleasant time was spent in playing cards and games. A lucky parcel competition was won by Mrs. Third and Miss Sutherland, a visitor from Palmerston North. Following supper Mr. Thomson, on behalf of the Buckley residents, presented the guests ot the evening with a teasel and cake plate as a memento of their residence at Buckley. Mangold Competition The official judging of the mangold crop competition conducted under the auspices of the Horowhenua Boys’ and Girls’ Agri cultural Club was concluded on Friday the adjudicator being Mr. E. Dwyer, agricultural instructor to the Wellington Education Board. Though the initial entries were not large, 12 of these carried their efforts to finality under rather trying conditions. The wet spring, result ing in late spring sowing, followed by a prolonged drought, during which the roots made little improvement, eabsed yields, on the whole, to be lower than thqse obtained last year. "In general,” said Mr. Dwyer, "the cultivation of the crops was really excellent, and it was through not fault of their own that tho competitors did not reach the result desired.” Peter White, of Tokomaru, whose crop last year produced the highest yield (99& tons to the acre), had aimed at a three-figure crop this year, and was unlucky in missing his objective by four tons. His yield, 95 tons 18 cwt., was again the highest. Other resufcs were as follows: Cathie Staples, Manakau, 78 tons per acre; Eldon Jepson, Otaki, 76 tons; Noel Monk, Otaki, 70 tons; Gladys McNeill, Tokomaru, 65 tons; Joan Percy, Opiki, 57J tons; John Percy, Opiki, 50 tons; Norris Jepson, Muhunoa East, 41J ,Third Grade Rugby Playing in the Shannon Domain on Saturday afternoon last, Foxton thirds defeated Shannon thirds by 6—5 after a good exhibition of the code. The game was played as a curtain-raiser to Tne senior match, Shannon v. Rahui, Foxton and Shannon being the only two clubs to provide third grade teams for the third grade competition. Their encounters are always enthusiastically rollowed by their supporters. Early in the game, Mr. Moynihan, centre for Shannon, took advantage of a mistake on the part of the visitors to show a clean pair of heels to run -ound and score by the posts. Pedersen converted—s—o. Territorially, Shannon had the advantage of the first spell, But had no finish to their movements. Just before half-time, Foxton, for the first time, had the home team defending, and a clever movement found the Shannon backs out of position, allowing McCartney to score near the corner. Hakaraia failed with the kick, making the half-time sere 5—3. The second spell was keenly fought, first one side having the advantage and then the other, and eventually a good transfer, to Betty, wing, gave Foxton victory a few minutes before the call of time, this player outstripping the opposition to score in the corner, the game ending with the score Foxton 6, Shannon 5. R. Pini gave every satisfaction as referee. The senior game, Shannon v. Rahul, was keenly contested all the way. The forwards on both sides met as packs and played as such. Back play on both siffes was, on the whole, very patchy with occasional bursts of individual brilliance. The tackling, however, was deadly. The veteran, Mita Johnson, early in the game intercepted a wild pass by Shannon to score under the posts and convert —s—o.5—0. Shannon rallied and Cole score, but this was not improved upon—s—3. I-lalf-time found the scores unchanged. In the second spell Shannon gradually gained the upper hand. Law early niade use of an opening to run over, Nepia converting. Shannon 8, Foxton 5. Later, Nepia'turned a penalty to good account with a beautiful kick from the touch-line. Shannon 11, Foxton 5. Before full-time, G. Woods (Shannon) scored in a handy position for T. Henry to convert, Shannon winning by 16—5. The match was refereed by Mr. R. Henderson. Other results are as follows: Foxton 8 boat Athletic 6 in Levin; Kuku-Manakau «I beat Wanderers 10 in Manakau.
