Chain of Misdemeanours
Sequel to Escapes From Weraroa Farm WARDER’S PREDICAMENT From Our Own Correspondent. LEVIN, Last Night. Five boys escaped from the Weraroa Training Farm, Levin, at about 6.15 on Saturday night and their disappearance has been followed by a series of events that must be attributed to persons with little regard for other people's property. In the first place it is stated that the boys absconded by the procedure of locking one of the warders in a room from which he was unable to obtain release for at least twenty minutes, by which time the youths were well away. It is understood that the lock in question was of a ratchet variety and no key was needed to make the warder secure. Public Hall Damaged. Subsequently a car belonging to Mr. E. Webber, of Levin, was reported to be missing, and this car was recovered in charge of two of the boys at Hawera this morning. It is understood that the three other boys headed north across country. The Paroutawhao Hall, a new building which was opened only last Wednesday, was broken into between Saturday night and Sunday, entrance being made by the main door which had been forced open. When an inspection of the hall was made this morning a sorry sight met the eyes. Sugar had been sprinkled over the floor, while contents of bottles of essence had been added for good measure, together with a litter of broken crockery. Car Taken From Garage. It was also learnt that entrance had been made into the garage of Mr. Arthur Kilsby, of Foxtcn Road, his fivoseater car >aving been pushed out and some distance down the road, whore apparently after an unsuccessful attempt to start it, it had been abandoned. The car was recovered this morning. Subsequently it was reported that three bicycles were missing from Foxton. The three boys aro still at large. CLERIC’S CAR MISSING FROM PALMERSTON NORTH It was reported by the police last night that a light saloon car, 1937 model, had been stolen from the precincts of St. Patrick’s Church Presbytery between the hours of 5.30 p.ra. and 8.30 p.m. The car belongs to Rev. Father Jensen. Its registered number is 107612. It had not then been recovered.
