Feilding Harrier Club

INVITATION RUN AT MAKINO On Saturday the Feilding Harriers’ Club held an invitation run from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lamberton, Port Street. With favourable weather conditions and paddocks in good order, there was a good attendance of 12 runners to face the starter. A pack run was held, slow and fast pack, the slow one being controlled by J. Haycock and the fast pack under the coach (S. Movus). By the time they had covered three miles the fast pack had overtaken the slow pack, then carried on to lead by about 200 yards to the butter factory, where a three-quarter-mile run in was held. From the start L. Moore and J. Davenport took the lead from the Whittaker brothers, with J. Gleeson and R. Evans in close attendance. After they had covered 200 yards, L. Moore was still in the lead with the back-markers closing up. As they ran to Port Street corner, the scratch man, R. Lamberton, had taken over the lead from S. Morris, with E. Batten about five yards back and the rest of tho field very close together. With 100 yards to the finish, the three leading men were together, when R. Lamberton

began his sprint and won by about five yards from E. Batten in a thrilling finish, and then, followed S. Morris (third) and J. Gleeson (fourth) about 20 yards further back, the rest of the field coming in at intervals. All the runners performed very well, especially J. Gleeson, G. Whittaker and D. Whittaker. Afterwards the runners and officials were entertained to afternoon tea by Mrs. Lamberton, which was much enjoyed by all. The president, Mr. Webb, spoke, as did the vice-captain, Mr. E. Batten. So far the club is proving its worth, and a successful season is anticipated. Next Wednesday evening a special committee meeting is to be held at 7.30 p.m. and all members are requested to be present. Next Saturday a two and a-quarter-rnile sealed handicap race will take place on the property of Mr. G. Parker, Aorangi. x
