NEW ZEALAND IMPORT RESTRICTIONS Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, May 12. American exporters are taking a keen interest in New Zealand, according to Mr. W. F. Flake, American Trade Commissioner in Sydney, a through passenger on the Mariposa. “There was an immediate rush for information,'' said Mr. Flake, referring to tho reaction to the New Zealand import restrictions. He was in Washington at tho time. It was first thought that tho Dominion Government was merely putting into effect machinery for restriction and that permits would be grunted when applied for. It was thought that the Government was merely loading the gun. “It took some time to realise that the regulations were to operate immediately; that the gun had not only been loaded but the trigger had been pulled.”

He added that the immediate application of the regulations had caused painful surprise in some quarters. Many people did not realise the Dominion's need for preserving her overs" 1 . 's sterling funds. The question now being asked was how long the restrictions were to last.
