Passenger Killed

ACCIDENT IN CANTERBURY Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Fatal internal injuries were received by Clarence Amos, aged about 22 years, a farm labourer, Kaituna, when in which he was travelling as a passenger left the road aud somersaulted, landing on its hood, at Birdlings’ Flat, about 3.20 a.m. to-day. Amos was later admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, where he died at 6.25 a.m. The driver of the car, Ronald Turner, railway surfaceman, of Ataahua, received injuries to his chest, and his condition is reported from the hospital as being serious. CAR’S PLUNGE DOWN GORSE-COVERED HILLSIDE Per Press Association. TIMARU, Last Night. While negotiating a hill at Mungati this evening a car left the road and plunged down a steep hillside 150 feet before coming to rest in thick gorse. The occupants had a miraculous escape from serious injury. Ambulance officials had to cut a track through the gorse down tho hillside in order to transport the injured to the road, the task occupying nearly an hour. The driver, Mr. F. Eggleton, farmer, was uninjured, but his wife suffered petrol burns and injury to an eye, and concussion. Mr. Eric Hines, who had bccu an inmate of the Tirnaru Hospital and who was being taken home at the time of the accident, suffered concussion, head injuries and petrol burns. Mr. Hines’ mother was treated for a cut on the head. The car was extensively damaged, but fortunately did not catch fire.
