Third Day of Festival

The largest audience of the season attended the third day of the annual festival of the Manawatu Competitions Society yesterday, when keen interest was taken in all sections and a particularly large crow’d filled the Opera House in the evening. A uniformly high standard prevailed throughout, tho violin classes in particular meeting with very favourable comment by the judge. In these classes most of the competitors were from Palmerston North. Additional results are as follow: Instrumental Violin solo, 14 and under IS: Margaret Sicely (Marton) 1, Zane Bartlett (Palmerston North) 2, Fred Turner (Palmerston North) 3. Only entries. “Beautiful playing by young players. In Wellington we cannot produce anything like it,” said the judge. Violin solo, under 14: Maurice Adler (Palmerston North) 1, Cyril Boock (Palmerston North) 2, Kevin Ancell (Palmerston North) 3, Bernard liehir (Taikorea) v.h.c.; four entries. “All the entrants played with remarkable tone for boys of their age, and it show's that string playing is on a high standard in Palmerston North,” was the comment of the judge.

Piano solo, 12 and under 14: Marie Hoare (Wanganui) 1, June Bark with (Palmerston North) 2, Delys Murray (Palmerston North) 3; 10 entries. Mouth-organ solo, open: Rex Grant (Palmerston North) 1, Raymond Wright (Palmerston North) 2, Jack Mason (Palmerston North) and Hugh Tucker (Palmerston North) v.h.c.; 11 entries. National Dancing

Seantriubhais, under 12: Betty Thomson (Palmerston North) 1, Mavis Gannawray (Palmerston North) 2, Shirley Henderson (Palmerston North) 3, Doreen Tyley (Palmerston North) v.h.c., Isobel Anderson (Foxton Line) and Fay Rees (Palmerston North) h.c.; 19 entries. The winner in this class gave a really splendid performance, said the judge. Her dance had the necessary grace essential in seantriubhais, which w r as lacking in the other competitors. Highland fling, 10 and under 15: Yvonne Nicholson (Palmerston North) 1, Mavis Gannaway (Palmerston North) 2, Shirley Henderson (Palmerston North) 3, Betty Thomson (Palmerston North) v.h.c., Isobel Munro (Waipukurau) and Isobel Anderson (Foxton Line) h.c.; 26 entries. “A fairly good section, although the technique is disappointing still,” commented the judge. “There are quite a number of competitors who show great promise, but are very careless. More practice is advised. ” Dancing Operatic dance, 13 and under 16: Annette Major (Palmerston North) 1, Fay Selwyn (Palmerston North) 2, Madelyn Hannan (Palmerston North) and Zoo Bailey (Palmerston North) equal 3; eight entries. The judge said that although only four boys appeared, they provided quite a good clans. Character or demi-eharacter daace, 10 and under 13: Shirley Webster (Wanganui) 1, Pauline Matthew (Wellington) 2, Therese Griffin (Wanganui) 3, I.ola Bosher (Wanganui) and Patricia Davis (Wanganui) v.h.c., Ngaire Euscoe (Wanganui) h.c.; 27 entries. The standard was average and the winner outstanding for a character performance, said the judge.
