Third Day of Festival

The largest audience of the season attended the third day of the annual festival of the Manawatu Competitions Society yesterday, when keen interest was taken in all sections and a particularly large crow’d filled the Opera House in the evening. A uniformly high standard prevailed throughout, tho violin classes in particular meeting with very favourable comment by the judge. In these classes most of the competitors were from Palmerston North. Additional results are as follow: Instrumental Violin solo, 14 and under IS: Margaret Sicely (Marton) 1, Zane Bartlett (Palmerston North) 2, Fred Turner (Palmerston North) 3. Only entries. “Beautiful playing by young players. In Wellington we cannot produce anything like it,” said the judge. Violin solo, under 14: Maurice Adler (Palmerston North) 1, Cyril Boock (Palmerston North) 2, Kevin Ancell (Palmerston North) 3, Bernard liehir (Taikorea) v.h.c.; four entries. “All the entrants played with remarkable tone for boys of their age, and it show's that string playing is on a high standard in Palmerston North,” was the comment of the judge.
