Otago-Southland Young Fanners
TOUR OF THE NORTH ISLAND A party of 23 young farmers from the Otago-Southland Club, at present touring portion of the North Islaild, attended a meeting of the Manawatu district executive yesterday. The tour, which began on May 6 and will conclude on May 20, includes the Wellington, Manawatu, Taranaki and Wairarapa districts. The party arrived in Palmerston North on Monday and will leave to-morrow for Wanganui. Mr. E. W. Barnett said it was pleasant to have with them the party of Otago and Southland young farmers. Tho tourists had already visited tho Plant Research Station and were to visit Massey College, which they would find different from anything in the South Island, even Lincoln College, and later a factory at Bunnythorpe, the seed testing station, Mr. Lancaster’s farm, which was typical of many dairy farms in the district, and were also to attend the Whakarongo Club’s ball. On behalf of the Manawatu Young Farmers’ Clubs, Mr. Barnett welcomed the visitors to the district.
The leader of the party, Mr. S. R. Whyte (Dunedin), thanked the district executive for arranging for the party’s entertainment while in Manawatu. He hoped that in the not distant future the Otago and Southland young farmers would have the opportunity of reciprocating. His council had realised
the necessity of providing a tour of instruction in the farming methods of other parts of New Zealand, rather than a holiday for the party, and they appreciated the range and variety of the programme offered.
