From Our Own Correspondent. After a period of lovely weather, a sudden change took place on Sunday afternoon, 'when conditions became cold and showery, only to clear later and make way for a lovely day again on Monday. A number of families are spending tire school holidays at the beach, and although the weather is too cold for bathing, the children contrive to enjoy paddling and playing in the water, while a few enthusiasts spend hours hopefully fishing at fSe point. A spell of fine sunny days wmtld bo welcome, as coughs and colds have been prevalent amongst the children, and the chance to spend long hours out-of-doors would do much to banish stubborn coughs which are the usual aftermath of ’flu. The Late Mr. A. Alsop The sudden demise of Mr. A. Alsop, which occurred last week, camo as a shock to residents of Manawatu Heads and tho community in general, and the deepest sympathy will be extended to the widow and daughters in their bereavement. Although Mr. Alsop was attacked by sudden illness which necessitated confinement to bed a fortnight before his death, it was generally thought that his health was improving and that the condition would pass with suitable treatment and rest. This, however, was not the case, the last attack proving fatal within the hour. Always hale and hearty, Mr. Alflop went about his daily work in the garden in his usual energetic manner, or attended to necessary renovations at his cottages, until overtaken by the last illness. He had resided with Mrs. Alsop at Manawatu Heads for the last 16 years and took great interest in any scheme for the advancement of the beach, both helping whole-heartedly in any undertaking. Plain, outspoken and genial, he was respected by all. A member of the cortufiittee of the Foxton Beach Improvement Society for many years, he was recently spected by all. A member of the commitservices rendered. Mr. Alsop had also been president of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce and the Surf and Life Saving Club, and had assisted the latter in many ways. He was a member of the United Manawatu Ixidge, E.C., for 48 years, and it was a fitting tribute to his interest in and loyalty to the Order that the Masonic Ritual was included in the service at the graveside. A large and representative gathering attended the service at All Saints’ Church beforo the long cortege left for the cemetery at Terrace End. Included amongst the floral tributes from friends and local bodies were wreaths from the Beach Improvement Society., Surf and Life Saving Club and the residents of Manawatu Heads. Mr. and Mrs. Alsop will be sadly missed from their circle of friends in the district.
