Tammany Hall Leader Released on Bail

NEW YORK, April 7. After 12 days in gnol, Janies J. Hines, the Tammany Hall “boss,” walked out on £9,000 bail to-day. At he same time he walked into the 1940 Presidential election picture. The imprisonment of Hines on corrupt charges, after a first trial had miscarried, was a major triumph for New York’s district attorney, Mr Thomas E. Dewey. Public opinion polls, taken at the time, showed that Mr Dewey had leapt to first place in public preference as Republican candidate fc President. A victory for Hines in his appeal would lower Dewey’s prestige. The appeal is not likely to be heard beforo October.
