POSITION IN KAIRANGA COUNTY Less than three per cent, of the rates struck by the Kairanga County Council for 1938-39 remained unpaid at the end of the financial year on March 31, according to a return presented by the county clerk (Mr. N. I. Nielsen) at yesterday’s meeting of the council. The amount paid represented 97.97 per cent, of the amount levied, as compared with 96.73 per cent, at the end of the previous financial year. The figures for the various ridings were as follow (shillings and pence are omitted):—
Arrears from previous years unpaid at March 31 totalled £433 32s 7d, as compared with £1248 13s 9d at the same date a year previously. Rates for 1938-39 unpaid at April 24 are to be sued for. CITY’S TOTAL 94.79 PER CENT. An appreciable improvement as compared with the previous year in respect of the payment by city residents of the annual rate levy is reflected in returns compiled by the town clerk (Mr. J. R. Hardie). At tho end of the financial year on March 31, 94.79 per cent, of the total rates struck had been paid paid, leaving a balance of 5.21 per cent, unpaid. At the same period last 93.91 per cent, of the demand had been met, the balance being 6.09 per cent.
The total of rates struck for 1938-39 was £91,527 12s 2d, the discount aggregating £1270 12s 9d, leaving a net amount of £90,256 19s sd. Up till March 31, Mr. Hardie informed the press to-day, £BS,4SG 18s 7d had been paid, leaving a balance of £4770 0s 19d.
