German Trade Methods Under Fire
CORDELL HULL ASSAILS United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright Received Tuesday, 7.40 p.m. WASHINGTON, April 3. The Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, to-day assailed German trading methods as destructive to world commerce. Answering Dr. Funk’s attack he said that Germany can trade with the United States under the same conditions as other countries. The German authorities, however, seemed to bo able to trade only on their own terms. Mr. Hull added that Germany was diverting trade from the United States solely to serve German purpose:*, "American trade cannot satisfactorily fit itself into the crevices of German needs left by barter agreements already executed with other countries," proceeded Mr. Hull, "nor does it have to." UNITED STATES CUTTING OUT GERMANY TRADE WITH TURKEY Received Tuesday, 7.40 p.m. WASHINGTON, April 3. A reciprocal trade agreement with Turkey signed at Ankara yesterday is expected to make heavy inroads into Germany's position in the matter of rank in trade with Turkey. U.S. DEFENCE BEING SPEEDED UP Received Tuesday, 7.40 p.m. WASHINGTON, April 3. The Navy Department to-day took an unprecedented step by calling for tenders from private shipbuilders for four destroyers and four submarines . for which Congress has not yet provided the funds, thus emphasising the speeding up of the defence programme.
