Manchester Street School

MONTHLY MEETING HELD LAST EVENING Mr. G. J. Fitzpatrick (chairman) presided at the monthly meeting of the Manchester Street School committee last evening. Also present were Messrs. T. Burne, A. Campbell (secretary), P. Maeguard, Z. McLeod, L. Matthews and F. J. Gaze (headmaster). The Wanganui Education Board acknowledged a letter from the committee regarding the need for additional accommodation for the special class and stated that it was realised that the temporarily rented building was inadequate and that approval had been given for an application to be forwarded to the department for a grant. The chairman remarked that the information looked hopeful and that the committee could look forward to a new room being added soon. A letter was received from the Palmerston North Milk-in-Schools committee in reply to a complaint from the committee regarding the late delivery of supplies of milk to the school. It was stated that the complaint had been referred to the Feilding representative on the milk committee. Mr. Jewell, who is the Feilding representative, wrote stating that he had been in touch with the secretary of the Palmerston North Milk-in-Schools committee, who advised that the complaint had not been substantiated in fact. The contractor, who was a particularly reliable man, had stated that only on two occasions had he been late at Feilding, and was making every effort to expedite deliveries, but it could not be guaranteed that delivery would be made at Feilding at any stipulated time. Mr. Gaze (headmaster) denied that the milk had only arrived late on two occasions. The chairman stated that, while not wishing to conflict with the milk committee, the school was entitled to request that the timetable be re-organised to enable the school to be supplied early. In the meantime the headmaster is to keep a record of the times that the milk arrives. The letter was then received. The headmaster reported he had received a letter from the board stating that any alteration in. the route observed by the school bus would involve additional mileage and, in view of the position, it could not agree for the children to be delivered to the school. Fifty children had qualified for the New Zealand Swimming Association’s certificates and, in addition, a number had gained beginners’ certificates.
