Quarterly Squadron Gathering ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ADDRESS The quarterly meeting of the N. Squadron (Manawatu) t of the Legion of Frontiersmen was held in Woodville on Thursday evening, when the commanding officer, Captain D. A. Honorc, presided over an attendance of nearly 40 legionnaires in Odd Fellows' Hall. A large order paper was dealt with and the usual squadron, troop, financial and equipment reports were duly received and adopted. During the evening refreshments were served by the Woodville No. 3 Troop and items were given by Lieut. D. Keay
(cornet solo) and Frontiersman C. E. Stevens (vocal), while Frontiersman H. Brooker provided the accompaniments at the piano.
As guests for the evening Ambulance Officer E. Sherry and Private W. nogdel, of the Palmerston North Division of St. John Ambulance Brigade, attended the meeting and addressed it. Officer Sherry made an eloquent appeal to N Squadron to undertake first aid and ambulance training for personal, local and national reasons, urging that each troop should have its first aid section fully organised. He particularly exhorted the country troops to take action so that they would be capable first aiders where doctors are more distant.
Another aspect of his address touched on the need in modern times to be proficient in air raids precaution and gas neutralisation instruction and mentioned the start being made in Palmerston North in these classes of work and sounded a note of warning regarding the impossibility of isolating New Zealand from the perils of modern aerial warfare in the event of another international conflict.
Private Flogdell issued an appeal to the Woodville legionnaires to undertake ambulance work as there was no organisation hero to attend to injuries on the sports fields. A wide area from Feilding southwards depended upon the city division to attend gatherings, thereby limiting the service available there. Local divisions were more effective, he added. Legionnaires were invited to attend ambulance classes in the city.
