WOODVILLE SCHOOL

Staff Shortage Considered INSPECTION BY MEMBER OF EDUCATION BOARD An inspection of the Woodville School was made on Wednesday evening *by Mr. H. S. M. Quigley, of Dannevirke, southern ward representative cn the Hawke’s Bay Education Board. He was met by the chairman of the Woodville School Committee, Mr. It. K. Johnston, committeemen L. J. Whittington and A. M. Pickering (secretary) and the headmaster, Mr. J. S. Mcßean. The present understating of the Woodville School was impressed upon Mr. Quigley, who admitted that the position was impossible. Having been a teacher himself he fully realised that the headmaster could be expected to instruct between 50 and (30 pupils as well as attend to the routine business of the school. Such is Mr. Mcßean’s task at present. The large number of infants at the Woodville School was also deemed far too much for one teacher.

Fully aware of the position, Mr. Quigley undertook to bring the situation before the board at its meeting yesterday and treat it as urgent. It is understood that few schools in the area are as taxed as Woodville is with such a shortage of staff. In the southern ward, Dannevirke South School has difficutlies which are by no means as acute as those here.

Other matters brought to Mr. Quigley's notice were the question of desks and cupboard and in this connection the visit of the board’s architect will be expedited.
