Live Stock Holding Paddocks

FARMERS’ UNION ACTION A decision was reached by the "Wellington Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union at Marton yesterday to grant financial assistance towards rehabilitating stock holding paddocks in the Hunterville area. The provision oi such accommodation to meet the needs of travelling stock had been represented on several occasions and despito representations to the Rangitikei County Council nothing very satisfactory had resulted. Existing paddocks had got into a condition of disrepair and where they were on private land the owner did not consider it his responsibility to keep the fences in order since he did not use the paddocks but had made the land available for the convenience of others. The subject was brought forward by Mr. F. V. Toulmin, of Hunterville, who mentioned the two holding paddocks in the Iluntervillo area. Both were in a condition of considerable disrepair and required urgent attention. Apparently the Rangitikei County Council would not do anything as it did not own the land; meanwhile farmers with stock on the road were facing difficulties in that they could not secure safe paddocking over night. He suggested that the union should make available a grant ** put the paddocks in order and by such action would be assisting the farmers. Mr. J. B. S. DudcJing referred to the Leedstown paddock which the Rangitikei County Council had promised to put into order but so far nothing had been done. The position was most unsatisfactory. He considered that the Marton and nunterville branches of the union should combine in granting financial assistance towards putting the paddocks affecting those districts in order. It was ultimately decided to make a grant up to £25 to the Hunterville branch towards putting the two holding paddocks in the Hunterville JVea in order and to endoavour to arrange a lease, at a peppercorn rental, of the two properties concerned. If these steps are satisfactory further action will be taken later to invite the county council to take over the paddocks and maintain them.
