From Our Own Correspondent. On Saturday evening a jolly party of young people paid a surprise visit to Mis* Margaret Fit? Herbert, Awahou South. A pleasant time was spent m dancing games and competitions. Mr E. The annual meeting ol the Pohangina Tennis Club was lieiu on Saturday, mere being a lair attendance, in me unavoid able absence of tne president. Air T. Sinclair, Air R. Smart wuo appointed to me chair. The pusi season lias been a successiul and enjoyable one. both iinancially and on uu courts. Twelve matcneif were held, as well as many practice games. The balance snows a siTT.sluctory credit balance oi £4 and member ship has increased from lz to xo members For tn« seventh successive season the club had entered a team in the Aianawatu Lawn Tennis Association's B grade competition. Tne team periormed creditaoly, winning five maicnes out of six ana cyin# with tne West End Club in points. Thu annual dance, held in conjunction witn the Cricket Club, proved an outstanding success. New nets were purchased an-j the courts were patched with tar. Tne club's president.. Air T. Sinclair, nas generously presented a silver cup lor competition between this and neighbouring clubs. This should provide an interesting and enjoyable competition. The thank* of the club are extended to the ladies for providing afiernoon tea on match days; to those car-owners who so generously piaceo their cars at the club's disposal, and to all members wno have assisted with the club's activities. The following were elected to office lor tho ensuing year: Patron, Hon. J. G. Cobbe; president. Air T. Sinclair; vice-presidents, Messrs J. T. Moai, D. Watson, J. D. Galvin and A. E. Orgius, secretary, Mr W. Smart; club captain Miss M. Maddison. It was decided to again join tho- Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association. Opening day was arranged for October 22. Votes o i thanks to the president for his donation, and to the secretary and club captain were carried by acclamation. Following the meeting u working-bee was held on tho counts. Cricket Club. Tho annual meeting of the Pohangina Cricket Club was held on Saturday evening, Mr W. Howell presiding over a good attendance of members. The annual report stated that due mainly to the exce. lent weather prevailing, the 1937-38 season was probably he most successful yet experienced by the club. Opening on October 30, ten matches were played, the clu?i winning six. The Saturday practices ha«i been well attended and proved enjoyable and profitable. The annual dance, held ir. conjunction with the Tennis Club, was u successful function ana a substantial profit was shown. Club membership show’s an increase of four over the previous year. Financially, the club is in a sound position. Donations w’ere received from Messrs F. Roberts and J. D. Galvin, to whom the club expresses its thanks and appreciation. The following were elected to office for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr F. Roberts; president, Mr W. Howell; vice-presidents, Messrs J. D. Galvin, A. E. Orgias, D. Watson, T. Sinclair, A. Balmer, and H. FitzHerberl; secretary and treasurer, Mr R. Sinclair; captain, Mr N. Moar; vice-captain, Mr G. Wagslal'f, coaches, Messrs A. E. Orgias and F. Wagstaff; selection committee, captain, vice captain and secretary; caretaker, Mr F. Wagstaff. It was decided to notify the schoolmasters at Raumui and Pohangina that, to encourage the school boys, the club was prepared to grant them the use of playing materials. It was further decided to open the playing season on Labour Day, a working-bee to be held on Saturday, October 8. Rainfall. Records taken on the hills to the west of Pohangina show that 5.58 inches or tain fell last month, this being a record fall for September. The previous hign tecord was 5.15 inches in 1925. The average September rainfall over the last 2b years waa 2.66 inches, the lowest record being In 1932, when only .98 inches was recorded.
