West End School

MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETING Mr. G. Tremaine presided at the monthly meeting of the West End School Committee last evening. Others present were Messrs. A. E. Penfold, A. C. McLean, W. Schwabe, J. H. Dal-ziel, W. Collins and A. W. Just. The headmaster, Mr. H. W. Jackson, reported that the roll number had now’ reached 435, but owing to the prevalence of measles and other ailments, the average attendance had been very low, only 360.8. Fifty-five children were excluded through measles. The school was visited yesterday by Mr. E. Crosby, inspector of schools. With the authority of the Education Board a collection was being made among the children on behalf of the Chinese refugee children. It was hoped to raise sufficient to adopt one Chinese child for a year, the amount required being £4. The books sent to the schools by the Municipal Library -were suitable only for Standards 5 and 6. As the school would be losing this section with the introduction of the Intermediate School he suggested that the library committee be asked to supply each year books suitable for the smaller children (Standards oue to four). He would like to express his appreciation of the help given by Mrs. Christian in connection with the selection of books for the library. The selection of books for the school library was left in the hands of Mr. Jackson and the staff, and a list is to be submitted to the Education Board for approval. Authority was given to purchase books to the value of £SO. ' Mr. Schwabe stated that the West End Swimming Club had ceased to function and had decided to present a trophy to the school committee to be awarded to the best breast-stroke swimmer. Mr. 1. Dustin had offered to award miniature trophies and to coach tho children of the school. The offers were accepted and appreciation expressed.

Mr. H. W. Cozens, district placement officer, advised that the Secretary of Labour had given approval for the continuance of subsidy on the basis of 100 per cent, of the wages-cost for the employment of tw’o men at the West Ena School. In order that the question of the further continuance of the subsidy might be considered, the Secretary of Labour wished to receive full particulars of the work that was to be undertaken.—lt was decided to find the men employment at the school baths. The Wanganui Education Board advised ‘that an extraordinary vacancy had occurred on the board due to the retirement of Mr. W. G. Black. An election to fill the vacancy would be held on November 2, and nominations would close at 5 p.m. on October 12. Persons who were members of school committees in Palmerston North city and whose names appeared on the roll constituted the electors.

Messrs. T. Richenback and J. Lewln were a deputation representing the West Lrid Tennis Club and made an application to the committee for additional area to lay two courts. At present the club was available to only 70 members, and there were many more wishing to join as the result of the erection of the State housing block. The club was in debt to the committee for laying the court, but no expense would be incurred by the committee in laying the courts.

Mr. Tremaine explained that the school roll was greater than formerly and it was not desirable to restrict the playing area. The extension of the tennis courts would interfere with the football area. As it was it was possible to get only two football fields from the ground available.
