PAPATAWA The September meeting was held on Friday, when Mrs. E. .Martin presided over u \ ery guod attendance of members and friends. Two new members, Mrs. lau Jiutchinsou and Mrs. Bailey, were enrolled and on behalf cf the mem bvr» Mrs. Martin extended to them a hearty welcome and expressed tno hope that they would both enjoy all the meetings they were able to attend. The judge* criticism of the drama circle's effort at the recent drama festival was received uud all members thought it was very favourable. Mrs. J. nalpin •was appointed delegate to attend the half-yearly council meeting of the boutneru llawke s Hay f ederation, whicn is to oo hcid at Noraewood on October 0. Jt was decided to hoiu a husbands' and brotnera' evening next montu to celebrate the eignth birtnday of the institute. It was also decided to hold a spring carnival toward the end of next mouth and the Papatawa ! garden circle nave been asked to man-1 age the liower section. Mrs. J. Armisteau, ot Hope lands, gave a very interesting travel talk on India and tnis was very muen enjoyed. Mho was accorded a very neurty vote ot thanks on the motion ot Mrs. A. Dickins. The results of the monthly competition were as follows: —isemor, an embroidered sideboard runner, Mrs. J. Kin an e and Mrs. ft. Hrauioy, equal; junior, an embroidered apron, Miss J. Bradley. Afternoon tea was then served by the hostesses. A very pleasant atternoon was brougut to' a close with the siuging of tho .National Anthem. The Papatawa garden circle met at the Papatawa hall on Monday, {September 5, and tnere was a very good attendance ot members. Preliminary arrangements were made for the spring show*, which is being held in conjunction wita the spring carnival to be run by tho institute towards the end of next month. Mrs. J. Heat tie, Napier Toad, Woodvilie, was present and she gave a most interesting and instructive address on the planting of cuttings, soil fertilisation and the treatment of different kinds of blights that attack flowers. Miss Beattie s talks are always enjoyed as she has the happy knack of being able to impart her knowledge m a manner that is very easily understood, and consequently her talks are always appreciated. The monthly competition for tho best bloom was well patronised there being 12 entries, and tho result was as follows:—Mrs. R. ] Bradley (hyacinth) and Mrs. A. Dickins
(stock) equal 1, Mrs James (Calendula) 2. Tho guessing competition was won by Mrs. A. Hall (Alaharahara). The hostesses for tho nitornoon were Mes* dames K. L*. James, B. Golder and K. j Martin. The nest meeting is to bo held at the residence of Miss Knyvctt (Maharahara).
