Labour Party Activities

MANAWATU ELECTORATE The monthly meeting of the Labour Party delegates in the Manawatu electorate was held at Longburn on Saturday evening when, despite the fact that the party ’s queen carnival gathering at Feilding did not conclude until very late on Saturday morning, there was an attendance of 85. Mr. A. Oliver, president, welcomed the delegates and referred to the illness of Mr. S. Carroll, president of the Labour Representation Committee, whom, he said, was still in hospital. Mr. C. L. Hunter, M.P., was then invited to occupy tho chair and, in addressing the gathering, referred to tho loss sustained by Mfr. and Mrs. A. M. {Sanson in the death of their little daughter. Members stood in silence In recording their sympathy with the bereaved parents. Reporting on the work of the Eastern queen committee, Mr. Bell tendered his congratulations to the winner and said that his committee had thoroughly enjoyed the contest. On behalf of the Central queen committee, Mr. (d. Shapleski also tendered congratulations to the winner. His committee had worked very hard and, in the many happy evenings that had resulted from the carnival, many new friends had been made. Mr. Hurst, for tho Western queen committee, thanked the previous speakers and said that his committee was very pleased to have finished in front and were very proud of qjueen Ruby and her sister, who had worked so hard. It had been a pleasure to see r.ne way all had worked so happily together in the interests of the return of Mr. Hunter as the member for Manawatu. Mr. Hunter returned thanks to ail who had taken part in the carnival, which had concluded so successfully. While thero had been a lot of sleep lost in the carnival activities, ail who participated had received a great deal of pleasure and now everyone was looking forward with excited interest for the crowning ceremony, which would take place on Friday, September 9. A cordial welcome was extended by Mr. Hunter to Mr. W. H. Oliver, of Pahiatua, and to delegates from the Aokautero and Whakarongo branches; of the party ’s organisation. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. i H. C. Sanson for valued services rendered. It was decided to appoint Miss M. Glen to assist the organiser in the completion of his organising work. Strong exception was taken to a statement reported to have been made by the president of the Manawatu A. and P. Association, and after discussion it was agreed that the secretary be instructed to discuss the matter with the officer of the association. Mr. Hunter answered a number of questions asked by the delegates. The next meeting will be held at Whakarongo at a date to be arranged. Supper was served by the ladies and a splendid meeting concluded at midnight with the usual vote of thanks to the chair.
