APITI The Bth birthday was celebrated with a very happy meeting on Tuesday afternoon. A lovely spring day aud tho docorations of pussy willow, erica japonica and spring bulbs greeted the large attendance. The president, Mrs W. M. Duncan, welcomed members and visitors from Table Flat, Utuwai and Kimbolton. Apologies wore received from Mesdaines C. M. Stanley and T. K. McLean. Greetings and telegrams were received from Miss M. Grant (Palmerston North), Mrs Barnicoat (Kim bolton), Mrs K. Waterson (Linton) and Miss A. McKenzie (Rangiwahia), and Mrs A. Viles (Apiti W.D.F.U.). Members answered a questionnaire about milk consumption, tho papers arc to be forwarded to the federation secretary. An appeal was received on behalf of the unfortunate lepers and it was decided that anyone wishing to make gifts for this worthy cause may do so at the next meeting. The roll call “The Noise That Annoys Me Most” brought forth a surprising variety of answers and a visitor awarded the prize for the best answer to Mrs F. Munro. Miss Marjorie Cranston, ol Palmerston North, delighted members with happy reminiscences of amateur theatrical work, relating many humorous incidents and jolly stories as well as a serious poem. Later in tho meeting Miss Cranston responded to a request .for further stories and was thanked by the president who presented Miss Cranston with a fragrant posy ol violets made by Mrs John Jensen, Mrs W. J. Viles occupied the lucky seat and was tho recipient of a surprise gift. Mrs Harland was tho competition steward and there were excellent entries in both competitions judged by Airs Elliott and Alias Elliott as follows: Dainties afternoon-tea plate for two, Mrs F. Munro 1, Airs H. Jensen 2 and
3- most attractive vase of flowers, Mrs YV. Al. Duncan I, Miss Stanley 2, Airs Pettigrew 3. An exhibition stall oi china attracted much interest with old china from England, Ireland, China and Japan. Airs J. R. Osborne gave much pleasure with two humorous elocutionary items. Mrs McNicol's social competition for which she donated the prizo resulted in lour members, Miss Roberts being the winner of the final draw. An exhibition bowl of violets featuring nine varieties was a centre of muca interest to the flower-lovers. Afternoon tea was a cheery interlude when friends had time to meet and chat. The birthday‘cake, most artistically iced in pink and silver, surmouuted by the W.I. badge and eight candles for which Mr» H. Jensen was heartily congratulated. The candles were lighted by Mrs Duncan Snr. and blown out by the youngest member visitor, Miss Rae Jensen. Miss Cranston who convoyed greetings from Palmerston North Townswomen’s Guild and Miss Roberts who expressed Utuwai’s best wishos, made the first cuts in the cake. Aliss Elliott, president of Table Flat also wished Apiti W.I. many happy birthdays. The busy hostesses who in no small measure contributed to tho success of the gathering were Mesdames H. C. Mdlntyre, II Jensen, Misses Stanley, Sophie Alalono and Audrey Hudson.
