Cleaning Hats

Straw hats and panamas can be cleaned by washing with soap and water, rinsing and drying in the open air and then rubbing over with the white of an egg beaten to a froth.

Cushion Covers. A certain lady has been making some pretty cushion-covers from ordinary scouring flannel with embroidered designs. A useful idea for cushions that are used in the garden or on holidays. The covers have zipp fastenings and can be easily removed for washing. Glass Rolling Pins.

In pre-war days there was a cook famous for the excellence of her pastry, who scorned the wooden rolling-pin in favour of a tall glass bottle for rolling out her paste. .The coolness of Jhe glass, she said, had much to do with her success. Now we have glass rolling pins that would have delighted her heart. They are the latest novelties in the collection of kitchen ware made by fireproof glass manufacturers. Mending Glasses.

Those of you who may wear hornrimmed glasses will know that the ear pieces sometimes get damaged. The other day I was shown an easy way of effecting a repair with a quill feather. Choose a feather that has a wide enough centre when it is cut to allow the broken ends of the frame to be inserted. Cut a piece about an inch long, fill it with glue and insert the broken pieces so that they just meet. Wipe away any superfluous glue and leave untouched until quite set. This makes a lasting repair.
