The Governor-General, Viscount Gal way, and Viscountess Galway will arrive in Christchurch from Wellington on August 9 and will stay until the end of the week.

Archbishop O’Shea, Catholic Metropolitan of New Zealand, who is about to visit Romo, will leave Auckland by the Rangitata for London on August 25. Mr. Angus McDonald will leave Auckland by the Niagara on Tuesday on his way to Glasgow to join tho Union Company’s new steamer Ivomata as chief engineer.

Mr. P. Haugb, supervisor for the Department of Agriculture at Gisborne, has been notified of an appointment at Petonc. .Mr. Haugh has been in Gisborne for II years.

Mr. J. I. Craig, economic and financial consultant to tho Egyptian Government, who has been on a business visit to New Zealand, left Wellington for Sydney by the Wanganclla. Mr. J. E. Walker, of Bulls, and Dr. R. AV. Gabriel, of Germany, became members of the Palmerston North Citizens’ Lunch Club yesterday. Mr. B. Doyle, of Himatangi, was a visitor and Mr. AV. H. Brown presided. Mr. Stewart Pitt will be arriving in Palmerston North on Monday in connection with the space to be allotted to the various exhibits at tho New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in Wellington, and will be staying at the Imperial hotel.

Mr. D. AV. Anderson, headmaster of the Little River School, will leave Auckland on August 9 for Vancouver by the Niagara. He will go to AVinnipeg (Canada) on the teachers’ exchange system, and will bo away from New Zealand for 12 months.

The announcement was made by Air. T. U. AVells at the conclusion of the Auckland Education Board’s meeting this week that ho would not seek a further term of office. Ho had been chairman since 1932, and it was not his wish to retain office indefinitely. Passengers aboard the Awatea, which sailed from Sydney at 8.50 xi.rn. yesterday for AVellington, include Lawrence Tibbett, his wife and a pianist, for a New Zealand tour. Mr. E. J. Tait sailed on Thursday aboard the Niagara. —Press Association.

Mr. W. A. AVaters, whose subject concerned air transport and other matters of interest in Australia, yesterday gave his 21st. address before members of the Palmerston North Citizens’ Lunch Club. Mr. AVaters has been five times to Australia and has twice visited Tasmania.

Air. D. AValkcr, a Tormer dux of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, has been elected president of the Auckland University College Students’ Association. Mr. AValker was one of the 1937 nominees for a Rhodes scholarship and was last year secretary of the association executive.

Dr. E. P. Allen, formerly of the New Plymouth Hospital, has obtained the diploma in medical radiology of the University of Loudon, and has been awarded the Chester Beatty Scholarship in radiology, for a year’s study at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, New York. He expects to leave England for the United States in September.

Air. O. H. Keedwell, of Messrs Abraham and AVilliams’ Levin staff, who was among those selected to proceed to England with tho September draft for direct entry to the Royal Air Force, has now been advised that he is to sail with this month’s draft. He will leave Auckland by the Rangitata on August 25th.

The retirement on superannuation of Mr. Rupert G. Fountain, senior stock inspector in Dunedin, after 40 years’ service in the Livestock Division, is announced, says a Press Association telegram from Dunedin. Mr. Fountain was entertained to-day by representatives of all divisions of tho Department of Agriculture, and tributes were paid to his work and sportsmanship.

Rev. G. E. Moretou, secretary of the Auckland Discharged Prisoners’ Aid Society, will leave shortly on a tour of inspection of prisons and Borstal institutions throughout the Dominion, under the auspices of the Prisons Deparement. The purpose is to stimulate interest in the after-care of prisoners and promote closer co-operation between the various societies engaged in this work.

At a recent meeting of the council of Victoria University College it was decided to offer an additional lectureship in philosophy and psychology to Air. L. S. Hearnshaw, ALA. (Oxon.), B.A. (London). Cabled advico has just been received that Air. Hearnshaw has accepted tho position. In regard to applications from Great Britain, tho council had the benefit of a recommendation from tho advisory committee in London, which interviewed the most suitable candidates. Air. Hearnshaw was very strongly recommended for the position. He obtained first class in greats at Oxford, his special study being philosophy, and he subsequently received B.A. of London with first-class honours in psychology. Mr. Hearnshaw, who at the moment is on the staff of the National institute of Industrial Psychology, has had experience both in lecturing and in research.—Press Association.
