HOLLYWOOD BEAUTY SECRETS

MAX FACTOR *

FATAL FACTS All rules, especially those pertaining to beauty, arc IMPORTANT 1 Otherwise, they would never have come into being in the first place. That very pretty and pleasing young Paramount star, Betty Grable, inadvertently reminded me of my opinion cm this subject not so long ago. At the studio, I stopped to chat with Betty just after she had finished her last picture scene for the day. As we talked, she was busily removing her film mhke-up with cleansing cream. Criticism Presently, I interrupted our general conversation to advise Betty that she was applying the cream altogether too briskly. Tho long up-and-down strokes she was using for the process comprised everything but a beneficial form of facial massage. “Better be careful, Betty, or you’ll stretch your face muscles,” I admonished. “But, Mr Factor,” she replied, '‘l’m usually in a hurry about this time of day —and besides, I’ve never thought those rules about how to put on creams and things were so terribly important anyway. Realizing that Betty needed some enlightenment on this subject, I suggested that if she could spare a few more moments I would be glad to outline just how important such rules are—and she immediately agreed—whereupon I proceeded to give her a complete detailed description of the proper procedure for a facial, and the rules applying to the cream massage involved in this skin conditioning process are tho correct ones which should be adhered to by all women at all times. Massage Of course, massage doesn't enter into the very first step of the facial. Covering the hair with a towel or a bath cap is the primary step. And the ears should be left exposed. However, an important cream-mas-sago rule does enter into the second step of a correct facial— Cleansing cream, in a not too liberal quantity, should be briskly patted— NOT VIGOROUSLY RUBBED— over the entire face, including tho exposed ears, with upward-motion pats. After the cream has been on some five or six minutes, its surplus should be blotted off with tissue or a dry towel. Hot Towels Next comes the application of a towel which has been immersed in water as hot as the face will stand, and then wrung almost dry. Hot towels should at first be applied only to tho lower portions of the :ace. The fabric, draped under the chin, must only be gradually elevated to cover the rest of the face.

This hot towel application should be repeated at least two times. Next in order is the application of skin and tissue cream. A fairly liberal quantity should be applied to the cenre of the forehead, after which it should be carried out to each temple with a smart patting motion, in the manner indicated by the first of the accompanying sketches. Wrinkles Once again, I repeat—do NOT rub in the cream. Vigorous rubbing here would greatly encourage the appearance of forehead wrinkles. Following this treatment of the forehead, a bit of the tissue cream may be applied to both the upper and lower eyelids. Here the rule against rubbing may be pyt into the discard—but onl> to a very minor degree. Rubbing must be done very gently, and with a circular outward mofcon, away . from tbo inner corner of the eye, as indicated in sketch two. The skin and tissue cream may be carried from the upper lip area, over the cheeks, and finally up over the nose, with the same rotary movement which was used around the eyes. Cold Towels The final massage of the facial calls for stroking the tissue cream into the skin of the chin and throat with long —but not too firm or fast—upward strokes, as outlined in the last of the drawings. The application of a luke-

warm towel, followed by several cold towel or ice pack applications, will add & final soothing effect to the massage. Last, but far from least, comet the application of skin lotion or ekin freshener—or, if the skin is oily, nn astringent. Tho rules which govern the ereammassage of the face also apply to the iotions and astringents. Cool Refreshment These should be briskly patted om to bring a refreshing stimulation of the circulation. Any brisk rubbing in of these lotions not only results in failure to obtain the desired stimulation, but may result also in an irritation to the skin, or a stretching of the face muscles, which always should be and firm. If tho very ultimate in invigorating qualities is desired from astringent* and lotions, they should be chilled ice cold before applying. After I had outlined this procedure for facials, with its incidental but very important rules on the correct way to apply creams, Betty Grable cheerfully “crossed her heart” arid promised never again to be an offender in the matter of violating these beauty rules. Last Words And I hope that those of my readers, who may be making the same mistakes as Betty, will promise themselves to* day never again to violate the rules, because they definitely ARE important.
