From Our Own Correspondent. School Committee The monthly meeting- of the Rongotea school committee was held on Monday evening, there being present Messrs W. J. Amies (chair), H. Rowe, L. Simonsen, A. Hill and C. Lind. The chairman reported that, ho had received a donation of £2 2s from the Rongotea Farmers’ Union, to b© awarded as prize money in tho No. 2 group of the calf rearing. competition. A letter was received from Mr I*’. C. Saxton, secretary of the Rongotea Householders and Expupils Association, donating £1 is, and asking the committee if they could see their way clear to do the same in order to stimulate interest in the root-growing competition, the money to be distributed equally among compeitors who completed their plot to the satisfaction of the instructor, Mi* E. H. Lange. The committee decided to vote £1 Is to this purpose, provided there were at least six completed plots. There was considerable discussion on the observance of Arbor Day, which it was finally decided to hold in the first ■week in September. A sum of £1 10s was allocated for the purpose of purchasing suitable plants for a hedge on the southern side of the school. The report of tno hoad teacher, Mr W A. Churchill, showed that out of a roll number of Bu, the attendance during the past fortnight had been considerably affected owing to the prevalence of measles and influenza., the average attendance being less than 50 Basketball. To Kawau representatives tried conclusions with Feilding representative teams last Saturday at Rongotea. Conditions were very trying, rain falling during the afternoon and making the courts rather slippery. Results were: Rongotea A 16— Feilding A 4; Rongotea B IS—Feilding B S 4 The visitors were later entertained to afternoon tea. An unusually protracted spell of southeasterly .weather .has been experienced throughout the district. Though no snow fell during- the week-end, conditions were bitterly cold.
