Death of Maori Chief

FAMILY GAVE NATIONAL PARK TO GOVERNMENT TAUPO, Aug. 3. One of the few remaining high chiefs of the Ngati Tu Wharetoa tribe of Waihi, Lake Taupo, Te Whetu Tautari, aged 7- years, died last right at Taupo after a short illness. He had resided in Taupo for a number of years, being a highly-respected citizen. He was a direct descendant of Chief Te Heu Heu, whose family presented National Park to the Government. The tangi, which is being held at the Nukukau Pa, Taupo, should be one of the largest held in this district for some years. Representatives aro expected from the following tribes: Arawa, Rotorua, Waikato, Manipoto at Te Kuiti, and the Ngaati Awa at Whakatane.
