Jap Advance on Hankow Checked
CHTHEBE STRONGLY ENTRENCHED Received Wednesday, 1 a-m. HANKOW, Aug. 2. A Chinese communique states that the Japanese drive to Hankow has been checked. The Chinese are strongly entrenched on the hills south of Kluklang and also west of Talhu and fighting has come to a standstill In both areas. World’s Worst Crime Centre BRITISH INTERESTS’ ENORMOUS LOSSES Received Wednesday, 1 a.m. SHANGHAI, Aug. 2. The Shanghai Chamber of Commerce estimates the war losses to British interests in Shanghai at between £5,000,000 and £0,500,000. It adds: “The city has become the world's worst crime centre. During the six months there have been two armed robberies dally inside the French and International Concessions. There have been vengeance murders and explosions of bombs In public places every third day. An innocent pedestrian is wounded daily and one Is killed every second day.’’
