Almost a Hockey Sensation

Wairoa Nearly Draw Against Indians HARDEST GAME OF TOUR Per Press Association. WAIROA, Last Night. The Wairoa hockey representatives to-day went very near to creating a hockey sensation, being defeated by the Prince of Manavadar’s team by one goal, the final score being 4—3. It was a glorious day for Wairoa hockey and the garao provided one of the most eliciting contests ever 6ecn here, the Indian players being extended all the way. As a result of 12 days of almost continuous rain the ground was in a terI rible state, being a sea of mud, with j pools of water in front of the goals. I Conditions were all against tho Indians, I but nevertheless they gave an excellent I display, their stick work and combination being a revelation. A feature of the game, however, was the determination of tho Wairoa forwards, who were j responsible for a wonderful display, especially in the second half, giving the Indians the hardest game they have vet experienced in New Zealand.

The score at half-time was 2—l in favour of the visitors, but the most exciting period was the last quarter of an hour. Wairoa equalised after some strenuous attacks and then the Indians again took tho lead. This was followed by another great Wairoa attack which ended in a goal, and tho score was 3-all until right on the final whistle, when the Indians again scored.

Included in the team fielded by India was a large proportion of players who played in the match against New Zealand at Wellington on Saturday last. The goal-getters for the visitors were Fernandez (left wing), who scored twice, Hussain (centro forward) and Shahabuddin (right wing). For Wairoa W. Carrington (left wing) shot two goals and C. Prior (inside right) one.
