Mr. F. Knight, clerk of the Magistrate’s Court, Auckland, has taken up his duties as acting-registrar of the Supreme Court.

Mr. 11. F. Searl, chief Government civil engineer of New South Wales, was a passenger by the Awatea from Auckland for Sydney. Mr. Justice Boyce, a Judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, who arrived at Auckland from England by the Rangitata last week, left for Australia by the Awatea.

Mr. A. E. G. Lyttle and Mr. W. H. Amos have been appointed the representatives of the Canterbury chapter on the Dominion council of the New Zealand Institute of Secretaries.

The death has occurred at Thornton’s Bay, Thames, of Mr. Charles Frederic Johnston. The late Mr. Johnston, who passed away suddenly, had formerly resided at Foxton and Wairarapa.

Captain A. W. Greville, who for the past three years has been adjutant of the Otago Regiment and the 3rd Composite Battalion, has received advice of his transfer to the QuartermasterGeneral’s branch at army headquarters, Wellington.

Mr. H. S. Kyle, who has been supervisor at tho Eltham Post Office since 1924, and who was recently on the staff at Marton for several years, completed his 40 years of service with the department last week and has retired on superannuation.

The death occurred suddenly in Christchurch on Sunday of Mr. J. Maughan Barnett, who is best known in Wellington as its one-time -ity organist and conductor of the Wellington Choral Union. For the pagt 16 months Mr. Barnett had been organist at the Christchurch Cathedral.

Mr. H. T. Thomas, immediate pastpresident of the Auckland Rotary Club, is to leave by the Mariposa on Friday for Australia, where he will Join the Nieuw Holland for a holiday visit to Java and Singapore. Mrs. Thomas will accompany him and they will be away from Auckland for about three months.

Paymaster-Lieutenant G. H. Norman, who has been accountant officer for the Wellington Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve for the past seven years, has retired and has been placed on the supplementary list of officers, although still attached to the Wellington Division. His successor is Pay-master-Lieutenant K. R. Buck. The ballot conducted to determine the candidate to stand in the interests of the National Party for the Wellington Central seat at the next general election has resulted in the selection of Mr. W. A. Appleton. Tho seat is held by Hon. P. Fraser. The selection as subject to confirmation by the Dominion Council of the Parwy.
